In October 1995, a hunter found skeletal remains, including a skull, belonging to an unknown individual in Modoc County, the most northeastern county in California. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, investigators could not determine the individual's identity but they believe the remains belong to an Asian or Hispanic man who was 30-55 years old when he died. It is believed the John Doe was 5'6" to 6'0" tall.

The clothes found on the man’s body include a long olive green jacket, similar to a U.S. Army field coat, medium/regular size, chest size 37"-41", with a stock number of 84057822939, a blue and red striped checkered plaid Levi brand western shirt with snap buttons, gray corduroy pants, a longjohn top, a t-shirt and purple-striped white socks.

Details of the case were entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) as UP17246 Over the years attempts were made to identify the man, but his identity remains a mystery.

The Modoc County Sheriff's Office sent the skeletal remains to Othram in hopes that advanced forensic DNA testing could generate new leads. Othram scientists will extract DNA from the forensic evidence and use Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® to build a comprehensive DNA profile suitable for forensic genetic genealogical research. A DNASolves crowdfunding campaign has been launched to cover the costs of this specialized testing and analysis.

Your support can make a difference in identifying this individual and reconnecting him with his family. Please consider donating to the DNASolves crowdfund [Who is Modoc County John Doe (1995)?] to help cover the costs of advanced DNA testing. Additionally, if you have taken a consumer DNA test, you can contribute by opting into forensic genetic genealogy matching to assist in solving this case and others like it.

Hey! Stock numbers that I am more than acquainted with! Given the stock number of the Army Jacket found with the decedant given above, I've run the number to get a photo of the specific type.

They first entered into service in 1965, so thousands of them issued; many for sale on e-bay etc, so I don't think that will narrow the search down any for identification purposes.

BUT, it is a distinctive coat for someone to be wearing and to someone who knows this man, perhaps seeing the jacket and the individuals physical description together will trigger a memory of this individual.

The stock number is a NATO stock number, but I've added the "00" into the equation at the appropriate place to indicate "United States" (each NATO country has it's own "XX" identifiers in the NSN system for their kit and this database is applicable to all NATO nations. OG-107 (Olive Green clothing) is headed by "8415" #s, so the "8405" is a generic # - it's "8415" specific.

So, 84057822939 given above becomes "8415 00 782 2939" for search purposes.

The NSN Database search shows this description for this military kit as follows:
