The principal of a St. Louis charter school where a 5-year-old boy was allegedly handcuffed was placed on administrative leave on Wednesday by the school’s board and its management company.

Sam Morgan, principal of Thurgood Marshall Academy, has said he wanted to “scare this kid straight” when he asked police to help teach him a lesson. He said the kindergartner had major behavior problems.

The boy’s mother, Aroni Rucker, said her son may have had trouble listening to his teacher, but that didn’t warrant him being handcuffed.

Wayne Harvey, the school’s attorney, said assistant principal Joyce Jefferson will be taking charge in Morgan’s absence. Harvey would not comment further.

St. Louis police spokesman Richard Wilkes said Wednesday afternoon that the department’s investigation into the alleged incident continues.
