Here is another thought . . . She can afford invitro but cannot afford another child?

She can afford invitro, but the cost of a double stroller is just TOO MUCH.

I agree that this lawsuit is ridiculous, but you have to wonder what the conversation was like when she told the doctor she only wanted one baby. Did they discuss the chances of having twins? Did she specifically ask them to only implant one embryo at a time, and they went against her wishes knowing the odds?

If a lawyer took this case, it makes me curious if the doctor just eyeballed the embryos and decided that one or both of them didn't look too robust, so to increase the odds they implanted two after they had agreed to use one.

I mean, is she really that stupid?

On another note, did you see the linked article about the woman who is pg with her second set of triplets...naturally!!! 1 in 64 million odds!!! She should be playing the lottery!

CANBERRA, Australia - An Australian woman who gave birth to twins instead of a single baby after receiving in-vitro fertilization has sued her doctor for the cost of bringing up the second child.

What do you think? If she got pregnant in the "traditional" way and was expecting twins, who would she then sue?

That poor little baby girl. To grow up knowing you were not wanted, almost given away and reduced down to how much it would cost to raise you. This woman does not sound like a loving mother to me.....I feel sorry for both babies.

I think IVF is free in Austrailia. I would hope that this case would be tossed out before it goes to far.

My jaw hit the floor when I read this! My husband and I will be doing IVF at some point and I would be thrilled beyond belief with twins! Everyone I have met who has done IVF also would have been thrilled as well...I mean the reason we do IVF is because we have fertility issues! If she really only wanted one child she should have only had one embryo transferred (and even then the egg could split and still become an identical twin). I looked at the paperwork/contract my hubby and I will have to sign and it specifically states that the statistics of IVF working (at my clinic) is 60% and then a 30% chance of multiples. My clinic only transfers one or two emryos on day 5 (instead of the regular day 3 transfer) when they become blastocysts. The transfer at day 5 gives the docs a better opportunity to watch the embryos longer and see which ones are the strongest -- thus a better chance of becoming pregnant. Anyway, we have to sign the contract saying we understand the risks of multiples. Intersetigly enough the contract also has both wife and husband sign and agree that husband and wife are the parents of the baby/babies in regards to all custody matters. I have a feeling that little bit was included because of divorcing couples who had children through IVF, possibly using donor sperm. Maybe a husband tried to say afterwards that he wasn't the bio-dad and didn't want to pay child support. At any rate, my clinic seems to have covered all the bases! Most of us who have to turn to IVF are mainly worried that it will NOT work....not worried about twins.

She should be grateful she has any kids at all. if it was not for invitro giving her the chance to have one baby, let alone one she would not have kids at all. She should shut up and be happy.

This makes me so mad! Does she realize how many women would be overjoyed if they could even get pregnant with one baby? Can you imagine what she must be like as a person? I feel sorry for her kids; she'll probably make them feel guilty for the extra cost for their whole lives.
That's what I was thinking. She paid for one and got two. She obviously had problems getting pregnant, so why wouldn't she be happy to have two babies? What next??...suing because you wanted a boy and got a girl through IVF? I agree this woman need to shut up and sit her a$$ down.

I'd actually prefer twins.

I said that until my sister had them. She has 3 boys under 2 and 1/2 and the twins are 15 months old and BLESS HER HEART! It is some kind of insanity.

Of course the woman in this story has filed a ridiculous suit and I don;t see it getting very far.

i hope the girls sue her when they get older for screwing them up upon birth....they are going to feel unwanted if they ever find out about this lawsuit and how she thought about putting one up for adoption, they will always wonder which one it would have been....it doesnt sound like they are poor either just greedy...

She can send the baby to me, I will love it if she can't.

Thank you for such a concise and informative post. I wish you and your husband success.:blowkiss:

Here's further info...happy discussion.

As an Aussie, I am appalled! She does NOT deserve such beautiful blessings.

SYDNEY (AFP) - A lesbian couple in Australia launched legal action Tuesday, seeking damages from their doctor after one gave birth to twins after fertility treatment, rather than a single baby.

The women, who cannot be named, are suing doctor Robert Armellin for more than 400,000 dollars (330,000 US) to cover the cost of raising one of the twin girls until the age of 21, Australian Associated Press reported.
The birth mother of the girls, who are now aged three, told the Supreme Court in Canberra that Armellin implanted her with two embryos, when she told him minutes before the IVF procedure in November 2003 that she only wanted one.

Hahaha. What a tool!

I have a friend that was a surrogate for a couple we know. Imagine her surprise when she discovered she was carrying triplets! When I expressed my complete and utter amazement, she laughed and said that she was warned that she could conceive more than one!

I think the lady in the article just wants $$$$.:snooty:

Sheesh, why not adopt one of the girls (or both to one family!) out rather than damage them both into growing up thinking that mommy didn't want one of them. It's on the internet now, they'll see it eventually. How sad for them both. What's she gonna do, treat one as less worth because she doesn't want that one? Poor girls. What a life :(

The twins are now 3. I see this as some sort of ploy to get $$$ to assist in raising them. I wonder if one of them has had a recent job loss and thought up this scheme to assist with that.

I tell you what, I agree with what everyone else has to say. I am a single parent, raising 2 kids. It has been extremely difficult and I wouldn't trade it for a minute. Even now if I were to have twins or any baby, while it would be a complete and utter struggle, it would be an awesome miracle.

What losers. I can only imagine what type of parents they are. I can see it now..."Mary, you want a new pair of shoes?" Oh, I am sorry, we can't because we just happpened to have Jane, and so we can't afford it" or "Jane, because of you we have to cut corners."

Wow what selfish women!!! Children are gifts from God. How would she like it if she was told not to get pregnant again like I was. That's when you get depressed...NOT because you are carrying 2. What a b*tch.

Also, they would have known in the 1st trimester that she was carrying twins. They do many ultrasounds in the beginning to make sure the pregnancy is strong. They could have done selective reduction (I do not believe in this). It was their choice to continue with 2. I swear what a freakin b*tch....

Sickening that a lawyer would even take this case. It is a sad commentary on some people's litigious mindsets that we even have to discuss such an absurd claim. I think this is an example of the complexity of in vitro procedures too, when unreasonable patients seek "perfect" (in their minds) results, as if they are picking out something in a store that they can return for a refund. Next we will hear "My 16 year old product of artificial insemination is a terror, I am suing the doctors and lab technicians."

I would think that most people who had wanted and hoped for a baby would feel doubly-blessed with two!!! People are sooooo stupid. Didn't she know that fertility treatments increase the likelihood of multiples?

I have a feeling this was planned before she even went to the doctor. Call my cynical.
