India's creaking railway system is the world's fourth largest, ferrying more than 20 million people each day, but it has a poor safety record, with thousands of people dying in accidents every year.Nitika Trivedi, a student who boarded the train with her family, said images of the victims' bodies would long haunt her.
"I had never seen anything like this in my life before. I am shaken to the core," she said.

Horrible. It also just baffles me that it seems people have accepted the thousands dying yearly... I'm sure they don't really have an alternative for train travel... but those numbers are insane. :(

The world's worst train disasters

The deadliest occurred in Sri Lanka during the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, which claimed 1,700 lives. It was the Queen of The Sea.

The deadliest train accident without any weather or seismic event is Bihar Train Derailment on June 6, 1981. It claimed 800 lives. However, some attribute the bridge from being damaged from a tropical cyclone, flooding, or brake failure to avoid hitting a water buffalo.

The latest on the tragedy:

PUKHRAYAN, India - At least 115 people were killed when an overnight passenger train rolled off the track in northern India early Sunday, with rescuers working into the night to pull people out of the mangled coaches, police said.

The death toll was expected to rise further because rescue workers had yet to gain access to one of the worst-damaged of the 14 coaches that derailed, said Daljeet Chaudhary, a director general of police. About 150 people were injured, he said.
