Death penalty for Morocco tourist murderers

Three Islamic State group supporters who murdered two Scandinavian hikers in Morocco have been sentenced to death.

The verdicts for ringleader Abdessamad Ejjoud, Younes Ouaziyad and Rachid Afatti follow petitions on social media calling for their execution.

Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, 24, from Denmark, and Maren Ueland, 28, from Norway, were found beheaded in the High Atlas mountains in December.

If the executions go ahead, they will be the first in Morocco since 1993.

Excellent news! That is the deterrent that is needed to prevent something like this from happening again in that part of the world.

Death sentences upheld for Morocco's backpacker murderers

A Moroccan appeals court upheld, late on Wednesday, death sentences against three Moroccan men for murdering two Scandinavian women in the Atlas Mountains last December.

A fourth man was also handed capital punishment after he was sentenced to life in prison by an anti-terrorism court on July 18. The other three were handed death sentences at the time.

The fourth man, Abderrahmane Khiali, said he was part of the group but left before the murders.

Maroc: un homme condamné à mort pour le meurtre de deux touristes scandinaves en 2018 s'est suicidé

A Moroccan prisoner, sentenced to death for the double murder of two Scandinavian tourists in 2018, committed suicide Tuesday morning in his cell, the prison administration announced.

Incarcerated in the prison of Oujda (eastern Morocco), Abderrahim Khayali, 36, had taken part in the raid in the High Atlas that had brutally killed two Scandinavian tourists in December 2018.

Abderrahim Khayali had taken part in the raid in the High Atlas but had left before the murders. The prosecutor had nevertheless requested on appeal the death penalty against him. The other three condemned to death, radicalised Islamists, had confessed their participation in this double murder which had shocked Morocco.

The death penalty is de facto theoretical in Morocco due to a moratorium in force since 1993.

I hadn't thought about this case in a long time. It is just unbelievable. I can never understand that desire to horribly murder complete strangers that are minding their own business.
