I am the opposite of most travelers. I prefer to check everything and carry on very little. I fly lots and only once has my checked bag not arrived with me. I like to walk on the plan with nothing but my book and phone.

Basically it sounds like they should have dumped fuel before attempting to land. The plane was very heavy because it just took off with all the fuel. I believe usually in those type of situations pilots circle around dumping fuel before attempting to land.
