Pontiac city employees had known the home where three kids were found living alone in squalor was an unregistered rental as early as April 2020, a violation that was corrected only after the children were rescued last week, according to city records and officials.

City inspectors sent letters to the landlords at the Lydia Lane home in Pontiac five times in 2020 about the unregistered rental and once in 2022, and physically...

the article basically says that yes the city knew since at least April of 2020 that the home was an "unregistered" rental. City sent letters to landlord about five times in 2020 about that issue and once again in 2022. In June of 2024 an inspector did a visual exterior inspection of a porch repair but had no reason to enter the home.

Looking at the address on Google maps - this appears to be a condo/triplex? Were there no neighbors aware of what had to be a breathtaking stench??

Children living alone abandoned inside a house, with no adult living there at all, for lengthy periods of time, in the U.S.-- I don't think that's happening often, but JMO.
(For shorter periods of time and in some other countries,though, yes.)

With respect, that's my point. 8 years ago, I would have agreed with you. That a time in my life when everything changed and I became involved in a large family, with generational issues of homelessness, addiction, and abuse. What I witnessed with my own eyes included 17 kids across three states, which is why it took so long for my family to learn the truth

I'll be honest: My own inlaws have abandoned children multiple times, alone, for over a year, almost two years. Ages 12, 13, and 15. We tried for years to get CPS and police involved after their mom took them away, and it was only something so bad, that made them finally come. And it was in a apartment complex where everyone knew the kids were inside, they were not hiding, everyone knew they were alone.

My point is, it is happening. I just want people to be aware, and pay attention, it could be you, who notices, and makes that difference for a child.

Maybe it does happen more than I want to imagine. What are these parents thinking, though? I understand depression or addiction might lead to "checking out" from your kids completely but to actually go live away from them while leaving them all alone is just dangerous, cruel, heartbreaking.

It really is. I can't really go into detail without going off topic, but it is pervasive. And lockdown basically made CPS go into sleep mode, and they never really came back.

The parent who does this, checks out and walks away, is not thinking at all. Not beyond that current moment. They are in more than denial, they are in a total fantasy land. They are not living in reality.

I think the cash only bond is an unjust request in our current criminal justice procedure. No child died in this story.
Can they just request stupid bond amounts from people who have not been convicted based on however they feel or is there a set guidelines for bond amounts?

It's a miracle none of the children 'in this story' died. Though not dead, these children will face a lifetime of trauma because of the neglect from their mother.
Stupid bond amounts indeed, should be scraped because no bond would be more appropriate more often than not imo

I think the requested bond amount is absurd. I don't dispute the trauma these kids have faced at all. I just want to understand how these bond amounts are set.
I kinda think bond amounts should be equally set for everyone.

In my opinion the bond amount is due to the judge believing she should have no bond at all yet is required to give her one. Maybe she believes she's a flight risk. It seems like there are no required bond guidelines.

"Quirindongo-Baunsoe had been pushing for a personal bond with conditions.

After having a bench conference with both attorneys, Walker said the court is willing to do “an evaluation of appropriate pretrial release conditions.”

The judge said the court would have to consider multiple factors when it comes to changes to bond, including their criminal record, history of appearance or flight risk, substance abuse, mental condition, and character. Additional considerations include the seriou

sness of the offense, likelihood of conviction, employment and financial history, community ties, and the availability of community members to vouch for the defendant.

This motion was approved. Both attorneys will return to court at noon, Friday, March 7, to make their cases for reasonable bond, where it will be reviewed and changes might be made.'
