I would bet they could easily negotiate immunity for any charges in exchange for testimony.

Perhaps. The questions are - would he still be eligible for the reward? Would he want to get involved in a murder case? Would he want to jeopardise his career?

I should add that hackers are primarily white males between the ages of 18-25. Many go on to have successful careers in the computer world and the best hackers often end up in top jobs working as anti-hackers!

I would urge you to research Kevin Mitnick in this. He is a classic example and possibly the world's most famous hacker. The film "War Games" was inspired by him. He has a HUGE following on the net and now works in a role advising on computer security.
