Identified! MS - Hancock Co., 'Rosa Doe' 414UFMS, 32-42, May'03 - Asenath Woodin

  • #41
Jones submitted a DNA sample to an anthropology laboratory at Louisiana State University, which facilitates forensic testing on unidentified remains. The results revealed similarities, but ultimately proved inconclusive.

To be sure, investigators needed a sample from another relative. They managed to track down Woodin's estranged son, Thomas Woodin. He, too, gave them a sample. It, too, proved inconclusive.

But when lab analysts examined Thomas Woodin's DNA, something gave them pause. It wasn't enough to declare a match, but his sample shared exactly 50 percent of the genetic traits as those of the unidentified woman.

That, experts said, suggested that the woman could have been Thomas Woodin's parent. Still, they needed more.

In September, detectives with the Polk County Sheriff's Office obtained DNA from Woodin's mother, Asenath Jones of Winter Haven. Two months later, Rosa Doe finally had a name.

I don't understand this. If you have a mother and son and a 50 % DNA match, how is that inconclusive and not enough to declare a match?

im not missing, on drugs, or homeless as the story implies. i left my wife for personal reasons and just found out that my sister was identified via dna testing about an hour ago. no one bothered to let me know i had to find out via internet research. sadly, the last story written by the tampa bay times quoted perhaps the worst possible source of information available, my wife. way to go with the responsible journalism. anywho i'm glad to have closure but sad that as much as i am wrong about things i was right about this. thank you for your kind words and sentiments.

aj

Whew, I'm glad you're okay! I was worried about you.

I'm so sorry you had to find out about your sister that way. I'm sorry you had to lose her that way.

the person who's childhood abuse of my sister launched her into the lifestyle that eventually cost her life was reported (by me) for not registering the correct address as a sexual offender. this is a felony in the state of florida.

Ajinoz, man it's good to hear you are ok.

You are a great brother. I hope they find out who did this to your sister. I read in one of the articles that they have a person of interest. That was really quick based on the fact that they just identified her. It must be someone she knew.

I'm sure this all brings up many memories for you and I hope that you can focus on the happy times you and your sister shared together. She will live forever in your memories. I sincerely hope you find a path to peace and love in your heart.

I have been following this thread... I was so worried when it was stated that ajinoz was missing- very relieved that was not the case. I was actually about to open a new thread for him in our missing forum discussion.

ajinoz,
I am so terribly sorry for your loss. I can tell you have a strong bond with your sister and adore her. These things never change no matter how long it has been since you have seen each other. I am sure she is looking over you with great pride now, as you are the reason that she was finally identified. I hope now she will receive the justice she so deserves.

"clothing was burned off".... I'm not sure I understand that -- like WHILE on the body? From the weather? Taken off and burned in a pile alongside?

I'll never understand how people can be so horrible. I'm sorry this happened to your sister, but I do hope it brings closure to your family.

Oh my gosh, I would've been a sophomore in high school at the local high school whenever your sister was killed ajinoz. I don't remember it, but then again at 16 your head is full of all kinds of other stuff. I only realized we had a Jane Doe in our county when I logged in today and saw this title.

Strange thing is, there's actually a second Jane Doe that our coroner is having exhumed because she was involved in a hit & run accident, not far from where your sister was found, just on the other side of Stennis and on I-10 from where your sister was located. Hopefully another family will finally get some closure also.

I just learned the good news today. I'm so happy to know Asenath has finally been given her name back. Very glad to know you're okay, as well, ajinoz. The story you described is too common. I'm so sorry it happened to Asenath. I've always thought our other Hancock County Doe had a similar experience, except that she would've been dropped off and abandoned at the rest stop. How wonderful it would be to have both of these cases solved.

a.allison, have you seen the thread for the other UID? This is the link.
