I understand what you’re saying. As awful as the outcome is, maybe the father leaving the children alone was due to not thinking clearly because of the medical problems he was dealing with.
But then, I think back to where the witness stated he never asked for any type of help, just that he was looking for his wife. So I feel he knew what was going on. I just know it’s horrific what the two children had to endure.

As for the mother...is her charges due to leaving her husband & kids to call for someone to pick her up? I feel there’s more to the story for them to charge her.

Then I wonder why the guy left the kids? Why not drive around to look for his wife?
And why didn’t he have shoes on? That’s weird to me as well.

It’s possible he also succumbed to the elements or even got a ride back to NC. IMO.
Yeah, what’s with the no shoes thing?

Older case that I can't find anything new on, but I just wanted to add this info to the Mom's neglect charge:

MOTHER CHARGED WITH FELONY CHILD NEGLECT, BOND SET AT $1 MILLION

Search continues for father of abandoned children

Also some info is a little different in a couple articles that I bolded below - though I don't know which version is correct:

According to the report, police found the abandoned vehicle off-road in a wooded area — and neither child was in the truck, contrary to earlier local reports that said the toddler was found dead in the abandoned vehicle. The 7-year-old and the 2-year-old managed to leave the truck, but were separated sometime after that.

BREAKING: Mother in custody as police release new information about death of toddler abandoned in pickup truck with sibling

Investigators say Harrison, his wife, Amy and the two kids were traveling on I-20 last Thursday when they had an argument.

He kicked her out of the car.

Father on the run after 2-year-old daughter found dead in Mississippi

On Thursday, Amy and James Harrison, both of Salisbury, were on the way to Greenville, Mississippi, to visit friends and the grave of a family member who died, Lee said. While on Interstate 20, they got into an argument about drug use, Lee said.

and

Approximately 300 yards from the hunting camp, authorities
found the truck, which had become stuck. In the same general area, law enforcement officers found the 2-year-old’s body.

and

Lee said he was uncertain whether the 2-year-old child walked away from the truck alone or if she was with James Harrison Jr. The 7-year-old child said he went to sleep in the truck and that the father and 2-year-old were gone when he woke up.

The only reason that I can think of for a mother to act this way is drugs. Even at that, I can't understand why you would leave your babies behind.

If it is drugs -- likely, I agree -- it would be because the person can only think of one thing -- getting high or low. To he!! with whatever else -- or maybe she thought she could find some quickly and get back to them.
This one is nucking futz, imo. What the heck, and damm.
Children seem to come and go so cheaply -- so cheaply...

Thanks for the thread, @Darling136 -- following. :(

Just for curiosity's sake -- the current temp in Scott County, MS is 69F. The lows don't go below 60F for the coming week.
WTH happened to those little children?
And that older surviving child must wonder what planet he is on now. Hoping he will settle in and be okay. Sounds like he may already be in a far better situation...

Yeah, what’s with the no shoes thing?
Were they near a lake or a creek?
The weather was mild enuff to be able to go without shoes -- 60--70F, I'm thinking. Maybe that's what they liked to do. Who knoze with these two ~parents~.

It looks like between Jan 21 and Jan 23, when the children were found, highs were in the upper 50s and lows in upper 40s to 50s in Jackson, a bit to the west of Scott Co.. Weather in January 2021 in Jackson, Mississippi, USA

Ackkk -- please forgive my hu-u-uge error on the local temps -- I thought this horror was very recent, d'oh. I didn't realize until I saw thread #27 that this occurred in January> Thanks for your post, @Curious_in_NC -- I just crashed into this thread a couple of hours ago, and did not read the threads as well as I should have.
No wonder the hypothermia. Those poor dear little children in that weather.
Mea culpa and SMH at myself.

I am left wondering just how JH found this hunting camp because now that I know exactly where it is, I can honestly tell you that it is not easy to find or get to. It is definitely off the beaten track.
