UNSOLVED MS - Long Beach, Skeletal Remains in woods off U.S. 90, Dec'11

LONG BEACH -- Human skeletal remains were found this afternoon in a wooded area of Long Beach by people collecting firewood, officials said.

What a strange coincidence. Skeletal remains were found in Gulfport just the other day. I speculated that they might be a man whose been missing from Long Beach since 1994.

She was last seen in Pass Christian where her vehicle was found at an apartment complex where she'd gone to meet a client. She was an escort.


Another possibility as mentioned on the other harrison doe, they could be victims of Katrina.

It is in forum style. There is a thread specifically for those missing from Katrina. It lists 3 missing in Harrison County, 1 (a male) was last seen floating away on a mattress (seriously) and the other 2 when under the water. I dont feel it would be any of them because I would assume they where washed out into the gulf and would not be found inland.

That's the site I looked at yesterday where I found Jack Fisher listed.

According to this article, as of last August, Harrison County listed nine missing Katrina victims, three presumed dead, probably the victims you just mentioned.

Even if the remains are Katrina victims, it's still strange that over six years later, two would show up within three days of each other.

Still no update on this finding or the one in Gulfport. I did find an article that gives the location, Markham Dr and Hwy 90, right across from the beach. I'd forgotten how undeveloped that area remains since Katrina.

The remains, which Hargrove said were of a male, were discovered by someone collecting firewood near where U.S. 90 and Markham Drive meet at about 4:15 p.m. Saturday and an investigation began.

A little more information:

"At this time, it looks like it could have been somebody staying here in the woods. The skeletal remains are scattered throughout the woods, possibly by animals," said Long Beach Police Chief Wayne McDowell.

The Harrison County coroner says the remains appear to have been in the woods for a month or more. Finding only skeletal remains, rather than a body, makes the death investigation far more difficult.

As for determining identity, investigators do have some leads.

"We do have some information that might lead to the identity. But until we can confirm that, we'll withhold that information," said Hargrove.
