"Am I dying? I know I'm dying..." Hattiesburg Police Officer

This is such a shocking case of violence against our police forces. I don't ever want to become accustomed to this type of uncivilized behavior. They will never earn the salary they deserve. My head bows to all involved and especially to those who serve valiantly and with courage and to their families who must go forward, one step at the time.

Something struck me during the presser from the Banks' brothers' mother yesterday. She explained that her son became addicted to pills while in prison. It would appear a problem in the community, and in many others, is that the penal system allows criminals to become more dangerous and then they are released out into the public to harm again.

Some criminals have access to cellular phones, pot, pills, etc. while serving time for their crimes locked behind bars. What kind of punishment is that? Prisons/jails/detainment centers can begin someone's addiction when smuggling is allowed. For that illegal activity, of allowing drugs into jails, should yield criminal charges against those who are guilty of the contraband making its way into the inside.

Every day, officers go out not knowing what the day will hold nor whether a "routine" traffic stop could end up being their last.

"It makes us wonder, because we have families as well, is it worth it to put our lives on the line and run the risk of not going home to our families?" said Edwards police officer Terence Crump. "But I love my job. This is my calling."

Tim Rutledge, director of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Alliance for Peer Support, emphasized the crisis police are facing now.

"I beg the public to stop killing us," he said. "If there's an issue with law enforcement, take it up with courts and please don't take up a gun."

Officers warned to be vigilant in wake of threats

http://www.clarionledger.com/story/...d-to-be-vigilant-in-wake-of-threats/27261465/

Law enforcement officers in Hattiesburg, Lamar and Forrest County, are on alert after receiving intelligence that they may be targeted by gang members in the wake of the deaths of two Hattiesburg officers.

Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel said investigators had come across some intelligence that indicated there could be a threat to officers from gang members after the deaths of Officers Liquori Tate and Benjamin Deen, but that it didn't specifically say what county, though his understanding is that it is the Forrest and Lamar County areas.

"We've heard the rumors and we're taking everything seriously, but we haven't confirmed the validity of the intelligence," he said.

Postings on social media echoed the rumor, but Rigel said he takes social media rumors with a grain of salt.

Nonetheless, he is encouraging his officers to be aware of their surroundings. That's natural after a tragedy of the magnitude of Hattiesburg's, but it's also best practice at this point, he said

"We're told in the bible in the new testament that we grieve, but we grieve in hope, and Officer Dean lived in hope. Officer Tate lived in hope. They got up every morning and worked for a better Hattiesburg and as we say goodbye to these men and as we honor and remember them, we grieve, but we grieve in the hope that we can still build a better tomorrow and continue the legacy that they've started," Pastor Higgason said.
