GUILTY MS - Officers Benjamin Deen, 34, & Liquori Tate, 25, slain, Hattiesburg, 9 May 2015

  • #161

This is the exact kind of trash I was talking about. May she be shamed and shunned.

She is not alone. There seems to be an idea floating that this is acceptable to actually say outloud. It isnt, and instead of pulling people to your side it is a repellant. Anybody who can't see that is blind. Willfully blind.

I'm curious to see why both Marvin and Joanie are charged with 2 counts of capital murder and Curtis is charged with being an accessory after the fact. The Clarion Ledger article says all three were in the car, so that makes you wonder if she shot too. IMO

I'm also looking to see if MS has special sentencing when LE is the victim. In my state that is an automatic LWOP at the least, even if you do not know they are LE. So far it looks like capital murder is a slam dunk http://law.justia.com/codes/mississippi/2013/title-97/chapter-3/section-97-3-19
(a) Murder which is perpetrated by killing a peace officer or fireman while such officer or fireman is acting in his official capacity or by reason of an act performed in his official capacity, and with knowledge that the victim was a peace officer or fireman.

IDK about sentencing, except DP is on the table for CM in MS. Still not sure if LWOP is a given like it is here

ETA At any rate, I think Curtis is going to talk up a storm if he didn't actually shoot anyone.

Has the POTUS made a statement yet?

Mississippi has the death penalty. This will be a capital case and they will ask for the DP to be given on the one that was the shooter at least. If more than one shot them they will also seek the death penalty on them as well. IMO

Deen, 34, was married and had two young children. He was a decorated K9 officer, and a partner to Tomi, a German Shepherd. His life was a little less public than Tate's, with almost no social media presence, but friends said his career spoke for itself.

Rob England, who is now an officer for the Department of Mental Health, worked at the University of Southern Mississippi Police Department for several years and formed a friendship with Deen. He said they have known each other for about seven years.

"He was a good old country boy," England said. "He loved life and loved his family and his job."

(snip)
For many in this small community of Hattiesburg the first death of an officer in the line of duty in three decades was a shock. The pain hit particularly close to home for Erica Sherrill Owens. Her mother — Sgt. Jackie Dole Sherrill — was killed in the line of duty in 1984 while trying to serve a warrant on a suspect.

When she heard the news of the two officers, Sherrill Owens said, her first thought was that she hoped it was someone she didn't know.

"I know that sounds so selfish because you don't want to hear of any police officer losing their lives. Then when I heard one of the names, my heart just sank because I went to high school with him."

She was referring to Deen, who had graduated from Sumrall High School in 1998, one year ahead of Sherrill Owens.

"We were great friends in high school. He married his high school sweetheart and he's got two kids and a great family," she said. "It's just heartbreaking."

You would think that should have been a safe job. A traffic cop in a small town? He was writing warning tickets for people who run a stop sign.
So sad.
