Hattiesburg, Miss. Lots of tears were shed Thursday at Temple Baptist Church in Hattiesburg. But there were smiles mixed in as people remembered Police Officer Benjamin Deen as a family man who loved his job.

Murder of two police officers leaves a gaping hole in the heart of Hattiesburg, Miss.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDRB) -- The candles have been lit, the flags have been flying at half staff and the raw emotion being felt by this close-knit community following the murders of two of its police officers is at an all-time high.

It's been five days since Benjamin Deen, 34, and Liquori Tate, 25, were shot and killed following a traffic stop and their deaths have hit home for many in the Hub City, a sprawling college town that is home to the University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University.

"This has been nothing like I have experienced before," said Amanda Miller, a lifelong resident of Hattiesburg. "Lots of sadness, lots of tears. I didn't even know these officers, but I feel like a piece of my heart has been taken out.And now I just feel so angry. How does something like this happen?"

MCCOMB, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A packed crowd in McComb Thursday night remembered fallen Hattiesburg Police Officer Liquori Tate. The candlelight vigil drew law enforcement from as far away as Louisiana to honor their brother in blue.

"He turned it around, fulfilled his dream, and God decides to use him in the state of Mississippi to say not that black lives matter, not white lives matter, but all lives matter," said Greg Partman.

Visitation for Officer Liquori Tate will be at West Point Baptist Church in Hattiesburg Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. A homegoing service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m.
