Sister of missing Starkville man speaks

“If he’d run off of a roadway, we’d of seen him for sure that day. In previous days to Saturday, me and my dad had independently just went there and drove from daylight till dark just looking for him,” said Hearn (his sister).

I’m very confused about the phone pinging for 6 hours in the same place. Did it start moving again after that? Or did it turn off?

If it stayed in the same place for 6 hours and then died I think that could be consistent with a traffic accident

I’ve went back to scan all the previous articles to see if it was mentioned (the 6 hour ping in same spot, did phone die, start moving, etc) but I couldn’t find any farther details.

So if the dad wasn’t expecting a visit, then where are previous sources getting he was most likely heading to see him? Did this come from a family member, girlfriend?

That is exactly what I want to know.

This one hits close for me. I have loved ones who live there and I am there at least monthly. I hope I am wrong, but I have a bad feeling about this one.

I wonder if anyone has checked to see if he might have headed to the airport. Before I go any further with this, let me just say that I know its a long shot and probably unlikely. I only bring it up because GTR airport is on that path that would take him from Mayhew to Columbus area. It is a tiny airport so if he was there, someone would likely remember him.

Another thing is that if his family was not expecting him home, then I would theorize that perhaps he was headed to Columbus, MS instead of heading home to AL which, for me, opens up a whole other bunch of questions. The google search for rehab centers is interesting and clearly material to this investigation.

Hoping and praying he is found safe and soon.

If, for example, he went and privately checked himself into a rehab center without telling anyone, there would be no way for even family members to get information on that, right? But presumably his car could be located if it were at a rehab center. Are there any rehab centers near this area? Maybe even just a hospital?

Im still curious as to who reported that he was going to see his dad, if his dad was unaware of this. They havent mentioned his GF yet who it seems he lived with based off his SM accounts.

Looking at his Facebook it looks like his mom recently died over the last few months.

A few potentially concerning things from his Facebook page:
  • under profile pic, mentions that he is "happy finally" but regrets his mom isn't able to see it
  • Oct. 21 post: "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade."
  • Sept. 2: "Possibly selling" a Glock G23 pistol
  • Aug. 6: Saw old note from his late mother, and it "hit me hard. Everyone has bad days or nights when you lose someone, and this is another one for me."
In light of the fact that he's missing, these look like possible red flags, in my opinion. Praying for his safe and quick return home.

This is what makes me interested in what his GF has to say or if shes been helping the family with information. It would be interesting to know what she would have to say about his mental state after everything that happened with his mom.

Since I don't know much about how phone pinging works, I read this interesting Washington Post article which states that law enforcement can pinpoint the location of a phone "within 8 to 46 meters." So, if they knew his phone was in the same location for 6 straight hours, why didn't they find him? Or did they find his phone?

Law enforcement takes to the sky in search for missing Alabama man

Ah, OK, they're searching with drones and on foot all around where the phone was pinged (but I still wonder why they didn't get there while he was there--or was his phone abandoned?). This article states, "He had also reportedly suffered through recent bouts with mental illness and had told coworkers he had planned to get treatment, which his family says they were never told about by Baughn." And it says a reward for information concerning his whereabouts is currently being raised on a crowdfunding site. No signs of him or his car yet, it says.

I hope he went to get the help he needed and is just in a facility getting treatment. If so, that would not be something that anybody but possibly LE would be able to find out, I would think. Other than family searching for the car, I guess. Given that he had or has a firearm (according to his FB) and has had mental health difficulties, I hope that this turns out with a happy ending and that he's just getting help in a mental health facility.

they didn't get there in that 6 hours time window because they did not know he was missing in those 6 hours.

That said, I am concerned about his past. Any problems with anyone? Sounds like there may have been substance abuse issues, so there is that. And that is where I am, sadly. Between that and a body of water.

OK, somebody educate me here. If "law enforcement pinged his phone," doesn't that mean in real-time, after they knew he was missing? Or do the articles just mean to say that they checked the records on where his phone was when it last connected to a tower? Or am I completely technologically confused? o_O

I believe the phone pings were from the day he went missing (the day he was driving from Starksville to Jasper) and they noted his phone had stayed in the same location for 6 hours. IMO the phone died after this so they have been searching the area where the phone was shown for 6 hours.

Best case scenario, he checked himself into a mental health care facility. The Google searches make me hopeful that this is what he did. But then why wouldn't he let his gf know where he's headed?

I hope his co-workers at his new job were understanding about his mental health situation. If it was causing him to miss work or something, I could see how that might turn into a compounded problem and make things that much worse.
