Rubin Weeks, 63, was arrested for the kidnapping, rape, and murder of Shondra May in 1986.WLBT
''Investigators said dogged police work allowed them to track down several witnesses who were able to corroborate and build a case against Weeks. It was not clear what new evidence were able to give that led to the bust.

The 63-year-old was a person of interest given his criminal history, with Weeks previously convicted for the 1991 kidnapping and rape of a motel clerk in Mississippi.''

Shortly after midnight on October 13, 1991, a young woman who was then twenty-one years of age, was driving home through Cape Girardeau, Missouri, from her place of work. Weeks, an illiterate thirty-year-old ex-convict, had seen [Ms. Doe] at her place of employment and had followed her as she was driving home.... As [Weeks] was driving behind her, he flashed his lights seven or eight times which caused her to pull over. She had her doors locked and her windows rolled up. He came up to the side of the car and had indicated to her that there was some trouble with a back taillight or some part of the back of her car. She rolled down her window enough to hear what he was saying, and the next thing she knew a hand with a butcher-type knife had come in and was slashing at her hands, which were on top of the steering wheel and cut her hands. [Weeks] then was able to get the door open; [he] took her out of the car; took her to his car, and started driving...

I think it's going to end up being a DNA match of his hair but I am waiting to see. I am deeply affected by this case being one year older than Shondra and living in the same region of the state. I vividly remember all the "blue-light" pull overs that happened the year or so before this, other abductions that stole our innocence and security. My dad instructed me to never pull over for a blue light at night. Scary times. I had the same "look" as Shondra back then and I had gone off to college. My friends were freaked out by our resemblance. As an adult, I now know many people who knew her and I know how this case has deeply affected the community she lived in. I'm so glad to finally see this monster arrested and I hope he rots in prison for the rest of his life.

“We had some handcuffs that were engraved with Shondra’s picture and it said, ‘Justice for Shondra,'” Lee said. “They passed those cuffs to me to put them on Tuesday morning and the deputy from Madison County that was with us goes, ‘I engraved those. It’s my company that engraved those.’ Until the sheriff told him, ‘Hey we’re going to arrest…‘ he would have had no idea. And so things just come full circle, and the Lord puts us in in places we don’t expect.”

I lived in the same area as well and remember the blue light pull overs. It was so frightening at the time because we didn't know who we could trust. And living in a rural area made it even more frightening. I'm thankful this evil being has been arrested and hope the justice system will move quickly for Shondra's family.

MADISON — A positive DNA match has been made linking 63-year-old Rubin Weeks to the 1986 abduction and murder of 17-year-old Shondra May, according to Sheriff Mike Lee, who confirmed the development Thursday on the podcast Investigation: Homicide.

Sheriff Mike Lee on Investigation: Homicide
Weeks, who was arrested in April and charged with kidnapping, rape and murder in the cold case after nearly four decades of investigation, has long been tied to the crime in most investigators’ minds, but this revelation does it through advanced forensic analysis.

“We have recently, and again we’re prior to going to the grand jury with this, but there is DNA that absolutely links the suspect to the crime,” Lee told Therese Apel of Darkhorse Press and Clinton Police Detective Amanda Johansson, hosts of the podcast. “So you get it first here, but the rest of that will be explained to the grand jury. The rest of that will go to the grand jury, and later on, working with the DA’s office, we can explain what that actually is.”

Chief Deputy Brad Ellis on Investigation: Homicide
In a twist of irony, Weeks had once demanded a DNA test in a separate 1991 Missouri case in which he was convicted of kidnapping and rape, and that test confirmed his guilt.

May, a high-school senior working at McDonald’s in early February 1986, vanished while on her way home after a late shift. Her abandoned car was found near her driveway, keys in place, engine off, and radio still playing. Twenty-two days later, her nude body was discovered bound with industrial tape and wrapped in plastic bags in a creek near Bolton in Hinds County.

The investigation into May’s disappearance stretched across decades, surviving changes in law enforcement and the limitations of early forensic science. The recent DNA results finally linked evidence collected in 1986 to Weeks, who had long been one of the early suspects in the case.

Red hairs recovered at the scene seemed to point to Weeks, who has red hair, and his pattern of behavior in the Missouri crime mirrored the details of May’s abduction. In that case, the victim was also taken from her car, taped, and left bound. It was nearly identical to the methods used in the May case.

Rubin Weeks
Lee said the arrest of Weeks is not the end of the investigation. Authorities are still looking into whether anyone else may have assisted or had knowledge of the crime.

Weeks remains in custody without bond and faces trial in Scott County on charges that could carry a life sentence if he is convicted.

The next grand jury is to be convened in November, and we fully expect an indictment.

@trmay626 We are all so ready to see justice served in Shondra's case. It's been a long time in coming.
