It would be good to know the reason behind this so he could be matched to any possible UID. Did it originate at birth or is it the result of an injury? Did it result in his ability to reason, make good choices and did it require monitoring?

Missoula remembers 24 people who lost their lives while homeless

MISSOULA, Mont. — Missoula leaders, organizations, family, and friends gathered at the courthouse for the 4th annual Homeless Persons’ Memorial on Saturday to remember the homeless members of our community who died this year.

On the first day of winter and the longest night of the year, they remembered 24 homeless people.

David James Smith's name was included in the list of the 24 homeless people who had died in Missoula that year.

David James Smith had been updated at The Charley Project on July 16, 2019. It is possible that David died between July 16, 2019 and Dec 21, 2019. I don't know how definitive this article is, because without a photo/birthdate, it is difficult to be 100% sure.

I think someone from the homeless camp, or maybe someone providing services, who was familiar with him may remember. Altho he could have always been wearing a hat so the skull deformity may not have been obvious. I don’t think it’s unusual for him to stay local all this time. When he passed away, what did the ME do with his remains?

Very good question, @PayrollNerd! I tried looking up death records for Missoula, MT, and for Missoula County, MT, without any success. I started to look up the policy for burials for the homeless in Montana, and I could only find this from Lewis & Clark County:

Burial for the unknown: Lewis & Clark County facilitates funerals for those who have no one

I also saw that different cities and counties throughout the US have different policies regarding indigent/homeless burials.
