The 14 year old, brings up a lot of questions, regarding sentencing for a "child".

Can he be successfully rehabilitated? How much time in jail should he receive?

There is a lot of rewiring that would have to happen in this kid, he has absolutely zero empathy or regard for the pain and suffering of another person. He actually scares me. That he is that deviant at his age. Empathy is not necessarily something that can be learned or taught, to someone who is already as antisocial as this uncle.

Does he merit life in prison without parole? I don't see prison as the world's greatest place for rehabilitation for this kid.
I agree with you. If you read where the six year old carried on amidst the abuse and torture of Alex as if all was fine with the world makes me believe the older uncle grew up the same. The eighteen year old didn't seem to know the seriousness either. I don't know if there is help to be had when you grow up in a household such as this one. Is 14 salvageable if he did what he is accused of? I don't know. I wouldn't want my daughter, who is 14, to date him.

The question is, the 18 year old was not raised in this house by these parents. Why did he participate when he was a neighbor, not a relative?

I don't know. He could be a psychopath too. "Birds of a Feather". Who knows?
Must be some sort of twisted group think, as mentioned earlier.

The 18 year old woman in the house is also scary. I wish that she could be charged with something. I don't know, the whole family is beyond dysfunctional and strange.

Perhaps he was the 18 year old females boyfriend?

Was Tommy living in Texas when he had the accident?

12-Year-Old Alex Hurley Endures Two Years of Torture Culminating in Murder by Grandparents and Teenage Uncle: Suffer the Little Children

This article has a lot of information and pictures about James Alex Hurley.

Apparently the hearing is March 6th for Sasser and Batts.

The author writes that the Uncle 300/14, was affected by his parents to be an abuser, and allowed to abuse JAH. That as a "child" of 14, that his parents were more accountable for his behavior. Uncle should be in detention, but not life in prison.

There is also an uncorroborated report that the 18 yo female, Madison has been arrested.

I've been advised that I should add MOO to my posts as I'm not a verified insider. I don't know how to do that.

Alex did not live with Tommy until early 2018 when he relocated to Montana. Tommy asked if Alex could come stay with him to get to know his side of the family after the move and Alicia agreed. Unfortunately, Tommy passed away while Alex was living there with him. Shortly after his passing, his mother (Tommy's)asked if Alex could stay and Alicia agreed because we thought it would help with his grieving process.

Tommy moved to Montana in early 2018?
Or are you saying Alex went to live with Tommy in early 2018?

Did a search for Madison and she is NOT coming up on the court site.

12-Year-Old Alex Hurley Endures Two Years of Torture Culminating in Murder by Grandparents and Teenage Uncle: Suffer the Little Children

Born September 18, 2007
Age 3 - Living with Alicia’s parents 8 months in 2010
Age 5 - Still with Alicia’s parents 2013 around Easter
Age 9 - moves to Montana to live with his father. August 2017

His father, Tommy Tate dies January 2, 2018.

Alex moves in with Tommy’s parents after his father dies.

Was Alex with these horrible people from early January 2018 until he was murdered by them in February 3, 2020?

During those two years - how many times did his mother go see Alex? How many welfare checks were called in?

And the neighbors never saw Alex after he was pulled from school in September? No one asked about Alex during the holidays?
He had no playmates in the neighborhood?
And the comments from Batts best friends!

I apologize, I was referring to the 18 year old aunt, not the 18 year old friend GR who was seen on video using a paddle on Alex. If I had to put my psychology education to work here, I would say GR viewed the Sassers as a surrogate family. I believe he viewed PB as a mother figure, and JS III a brother. Respecting them, he would want to please them, take on their moral compass and be like them. He was given permission to be violent with this one child even if he knew it was morally wrong to do so with any other child or person.

So they even had the 6 year old partaking in the abuse and violence. This is just the worst........

looking at the uncle holding the fish sickens me. He is so obese, idk how a parent could allow a child to be in such poor physical shape.
PB sure changed over the last 4 years, lol. I think her spa days are history.
Was Alex a special ed student?

He appears to be built just like his Dad. Perhaps football was one way to get him in better physical condition. PB- losing a child can manifest itself in deteriorating physical appearance.

He also lacks empathy. Any "normal" person would have notified authorities about this situation. Believe me, these people are not the "norm" of Montana folks. Sure, we let everyone mind their own business, but no one condones abuse.

I don't know if JAH was in Special Education, that would be a HIPPA issue if it was disclosed, so it probably wouldn't be.

However, INMO, CPS should document when a disabled child is abused, and INMO, if JAH was identified as "Disabled" eligible for Special Education Services, the charges should be enhanced to a "Hate Crime" or something, for abusing a child with a disability. That is beyond depraved.

“He was just a very sweet, loving boy, a little mixed up, but he had a good heart, and he loved his family,” Loren Davis, Alicia’s sister-in-law, said tearfully. “

What in the heck does she mean by “a little mixed up”?

That’s an odd way to describe a child. Mixed up about what? JMO

Reminds me of a very difficult child I had when I taught school, we had a meeting with his parents, and I was going to discuss a "Behavior Plan".

By the end of the meeting with his family, which was an absentee father, a truck driver, they were divorced. A mother who was an addict, a Grandmother who was on oxygen, I had concluded that with everything going on in this kid's family, he was actually doing pretty good. He spent more time at the neighbors house than his own home. After a year, I actually just wanted to have her come to the school meetings.
