Do we even know if Madison lived in the home as of recently? Even if she did, she's 18, I sort of doubt that she would be at home that much these days.

Who would want to be home? That place was probably pretty miserable.

From the articles and reports she was still living at home, and had noticed James being on the floor ( probably dead) on early morning Feb 3. She had texted her friends that he might be dead. She was very aware of the goings on in that home, IMO

Exactly. It's kind of hard to expect someone to grow up like that to snap out of it as soon as she turns 18 and to report what's going on. It doesn't work like that and we know it.

And now that? Do we want her to be charged with something like failure to report? For what? She didn't kill that boy. Not everything needs to be resolved with jail time... I can understand the outrage and the frustration but she did not kill James. Her brother did it, her mother helped. In my opinion, the father/grandfather had way more responsability and he can't really be excused, he should've reported it. How come he was worried about the little boy, but not about James? That's cruel. Also, the fact that poor James was just laying there for even how long? My God, what a nightmare.

I am not sure what they could charge her with! No jail time, but hopefully some serious counseling for her could help. That "home" was a house of horrors!! How could anyone come out of there unscathed?

Well, yes, for sure. It's important to "unlearn" some behaviours and to understand that what was going on in that house was NOT normal or acceptable. It's really urgent to break these cycles of constant abuse that last generations. And I know that not all people that are abused and that witness abuse ended up abusing too, but I think it's important because these situations are heavily toxic and damaging.

For what it is worth, I don't think these abusers deserved to be in his obituary. :(

Not sure if you are saying you think the abusing grandparents are in the obituary and think they shouldn't have been, or if you are saying you noticed that they are not listed and support the decision to leave them out. The obituary does list more than one set of grandparents, but nine of them are the Sasser/Batts couple.

Blood is s thicker than water.....
Imo he should have been worried about his wife and 14 yo son!

Hopefully all of these events will realize how abnormal her upbringing was and she can seek help from a therapist.

Much as I hate to admit it, this girl was as abused as James. Living in that environment.

Toss up her parents to authorities? Not an easy thing. She probably just tried to be gone as much as possible. School, friends, job, library, whatever.

Dysfunction. Sad to think that this type of environment exists for children.

James was his grandson, not a stranger. The thing that makes no sense, is the fact that they didn't even try to be discreet about how they "felt" about this poor child and about the things they were doing to him. To me, it kind of seems like several people could've reported it.

James Hurley is related to Sasser, jr.?

I'm sure she felt helpless & wished to avoid conflict. Her brother could have turned on her at any time. He sounds like the type one tiptoed around, hoping to avoid him.
My problem is she texted her contacts, she should have called 911.

Not really, IIRC. James is the son of Tommy who is the son of grandma and some other man. But I think James would be related to the 3 children, because their mother is Batts. I think. Is Madison the daughter of Sasser Jr?

Yes, Sasser is Madison’s dad, afaik.
I hope Gage R. Has not made bail, I’m concerned someone might be able to raise enough for him. The inmate search isn’t working for me. I think his bail is too low considering he is on video brutalizing James. Why the hell he felt he should administer physical punishment is beyond me.

But then why isn’t his last name Tate instead of Hurley?

I don't think anyone has reported on that except that he was named by his mother. Upthread.

So maybe his parents were never married, so he has her maiden name. And I wonder if Batts never thought James was actually "kin". Therefore, abusing him was okay.

Capital punishment is a legal penalty in the U.S. state of Montana. Of the states that currently retain the death penalty, Montana is the only one that has not handed down a death sentence in the 21st century. The last time the state sentenced a defendant to death was in 1996.
