Family repeatedly sought help for his mental illness. Makes him seem less villainous.

Brown's niece, Clare Boyle, told AP her uncle has struggled with mental illness for years and she and other family members repeatedly sought help.

"This isn't just a drunk/high man going wild," she said in a Facebook message. "It's a sick man who doesn't know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn't know where or when he is either."

Mental health services in Montana is pretty much a dumpster fire. And the VA is even worse. I know this for a fact.

The best services are from Vet Centers, which are staffed with veterans.

The military trains to kill, then soldiers are supposed to re-fit - w/no help - as normal people back into society. There are veterans with flash-back as well as remorse. It's especially bad for those involved in conflicts who actually did kill.

So what is happening to the VA? Cuts. The long-term objective appears to be to privatize the VA, which seems to say the government will push veterans from any post-government involvement. The US wants young and fit, but when soldiers are older or with problems, they no longer want responsibility.

In many of these photos he looks like a nice guy down anyone's street.

News media announced he could be headed back to town. If what his niece says is true (see below), he may not understand what he did.

Brown's niece, Clare Boyle, told AP: "It's a sick man who doesn't know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn't know where or when he is either."

The Owl Bar's owner, David Gwerder, told The Associated Press he was not aware of any conflict between Brown and the victims.

"He knew everybody that was in that bar. I guarantee you that," Gwerder said. "He didn't have any running dispute with any of them. I just think he snapped."

Manhunt for Montana bar shooting suspect continues as town mourns friends and neighbors

sad to me. So senseless. Just from the photo of this man in his skivvies on the stairs I immediately thought mental illness, possible psychosis. JMO

The City of Anaconda cancelled their annual "Smelter Day Festival" this weekend.

"Chris Marchion of Anaconda, an avid outdoorsman who knows the territory around Garrity Mountain and the Garrity Mountain Wildlife Management Area, said Brown knows the area well.

He said Brown has backpacked in the country and knows the terrain."

I am frankly shocked he hasn't been run to ground yet. Based solely on his very disheveled appearance and how very thin he currently seems to be in the photo shared of him that was alleged to have been taken right after the shootings, he appeared to be not in his right mind, not physically well, and certainly ill prepared to be on the run. Even though I know he is believed to have stolen camping gear, I just have a hard time imagining this fugitive is faring well if in the wild. JMO Hoping for news of his capture soon.

There are more. What screeening does the military have BEFORE they train someone?
The US military is huge and enlists more than 200,000 people every year. As a result, the military simply cannot do intensive psychological screenings of recruits.

Instead, the military relies on general back ground checks- that include arrests and convictions. These screenings are then supplemented by contacts with past employers, teachers and checking references.

But.... due to the sheer number of recruits, the checking of references, employers, teachers etc. maybe more in depth for some recruits than others.

And.... as a last stop gap measure, the military uses basic and advanced training to identify men- and a few wayward girls, who simply do not belong in the military. These recruits are then discharged.

According to this article, the bar was right beside his home? Was he angry about noise, or was he there at the bar? Did he get into an altercation or just come in and start shooting? So many questions. Hope they catch him soon.
The article indicates that he had very longstanding mental health problems stemming from his time in the military. It sounds like it was only a matter of time before he did something like this.

He sure doesn't look like any 170 lbs to me. Looks pretty emaciated.

Seriously, that must be a weight from an earlier time. I have male friends that are a similar height and lean, so I’d guess he’s closer to 140 lbs., 130 lbs., or even less in that photo.
