Glacier National Park issued a news release Wednesday evening, asking for the public’s help to locate a missing person.

Mark Sinclair, 66, was last seen at approximately 2:30 pm on Monday, July 8, on the Highline Trail at Rimrocks headed west.

Park staff working in the Logan Pass Visitor Center saw him leaving an unsecured vehicle, keys, and dog in the Logan Pass parking lot, according to the release.

Sinclair was wearing all-gray or nondescript clothing (possibly in shorts), a yellow bandanna around his neck, a gray waist fanny backpack, and no hat. His hair is completely white and he may have a beard that is white as well. He is 5 feet, 8 inches tall, and approximately 155 lbs.

Anyone with information about Sinclair is asked to call 406-888-7077.

Sinclair is a recent resident of Whitefish, and worked for a period of time earlier this summer at Glacier National Park.

Search efforts began on Tuesday morning, July 9, and continue by ground and air.

My daughter and group of friends just this afternoon hiked out from their 3-day backpacking trip at GNP! I think they were in a different section than this man, and certainly off the grid, but will ask her if they saw any notices of this missing man. Hope he is OK!

Why would he leave his dog??
Pets are not allowed on trails or in the backcountry in national parks. IMO.
Pets are allowed in developed areas, in frontcountry campgrounds and picnic areas, along roads, in parking areas, and in boats on lakes where motorized watercraft are permitted.

Pets are not permitted on trails, along lake shores, in the backcountry, or in any building.

Here's the link for all the pet specific rules for GNP.

then why bring the dog only to leave it in an unlocked car? Park staff (unassumingly known to him as he worked there this season) saw him leave the dog and didn't do anything? And as he worked there, he'd know about the no dogs policy.

This could turn out really bad I fear...

Leaving the dog unattended and his car unlocked, combined with a description of him only carrying a fanny pack, seems to point to him not planning to be gone long. Could he have been checking out a trail he'd be interested in hiking later? Or maybe he had hiked it earlier and lost something along the way?

He used to work at Glacier earlier this summer? No longer though? In what capacity I wonder (don't recall reading that).

This trail only recently opened.

July 5, 2019 - Friday

The Highline Trail is open!
The Highline trail officially opened at 2pm on July 3, 2019. Please use extreme caution as there are numerous snowfields. Hiking poles and yak trax are recommended when crossing snow patches. Looking forward to seeing you at Granite Park Chalet!

Unlocked car with keys in it and a dog left behind means only one thing to me. He wasn't planning on returning. :-( Unfortunately, I would guess he had a firearm in the fanny pack. I fervently hope I'm wrong and he shows up shortly!
I thought the same. he left the dog in an area where it could be rescued. And he didn't care about the car.
No news on his mood or what was going on in his life. Only that he worked at GNP earlier in the summer (what may a few weeks ago?) and not even much info about that. Sad.

Officials continue search for man missing in Glacier National Park

Ground crews from Park and Flathead counties and North Valley are searching trails and drainages near Highline Trail, as well as other mountainous trail areas near Logan Pass.

Reports from other visitors indicate Sinclair traveled along the Highline Trail and gotten as far as the Haystack Butte area.

I've been to the Logan Pass area. There was still snow in patches on the ground when I was there and that was July or August. I went down the trail, but you weren't allowed past the overlook of the lake due to a grizzly bear sighting farther down the trail. But those who were on the trail before it was closed were returning. There were a LOT of folks on that trail. At the overlook I could see quite a way down the trail and there were a LOT of hikers returning. The day I was there - middle of the week, not the weekend - I noticed a lot of hikers. There is a good chance hikers would have seen him. The park also has a lot of grizzly bears. The only one I've ever seen I saw my only day there.

I saw all sorts of wildlife in Yellowstone but only deer in glacier, the camp hosts talked often about black bear sightings. Extremely busy park, especially that close to the 4th of July. I was there July 5-9 and it was packed and hard to find parking or campsites, and the roads and trails were packed as well. I too think someone should have seen something or will soon. Hoping for the best and that he has some supplies that can sustain him until he’s rescued!

Visitor sightings from Monday, July 8 support previous information that Sinclair traveled along the Highline Trail and may have traveled at least as far as the Haystack Butte area. Canine patrols have also shown interest in this general area, according to park officials.

The park expects to issue another update early next week, unless something significant changes with the search effort.

We saw a grizzly there once as well and it was near Logan Pass Visitors Center and this trail. He’s from Montana so he is surely aware. And this trail reportedly just recently opened for the season. Still could be a lot of hikers. Some did see him.
