Details of Disappearance
Mildred's relatives notified law enforcement of her disappearance in November 2020; they said they hadn't seen her since July 2018. Subsequent investigation revealed the last confirmed sighting was in the care of her guardian on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana in April 2019. She has never been heard from again and the circumstances of her disappearance are unclear.

The tribal court had granted informal custody of Mildred to Veronica Tierza Dust and Roseen Lincoln Old Crow in March 2017. Photos of the two women are posted with this case summary. Roseen is Mildred's aunt, and Veronica is Roseen's wife.

On December 6, 2020, about a month after Mildred's disappearance was reported, a formal petition was filed with the tribal court, requesting a hearing because Veronica and Roseen had allegedly "breached their fiduciary duty" to Mildred. The court ordered the women to produce Mildred to prove her well-being. When they failed to respond to the summons, warrants were issued for their arrest. They were arrested in Billings, Montana in December 2020 and charged with misdemeanor endangering child welfare, but Mildred wasn't with them and her whereabouts are still unknown.

Update 2:30 p.m. Tribal Chairman Frank White Clay confirmed Thursday afternoon that the body found on the Crow reservation was 8-year-old Mildred Old Crow.

Mildred's body was found Wednesday from a camper near Garryowen. She was reported missing last November by non-custodial relatives.

Mildred Old Crow, 8, was last seen in the care of her Tribal Court-appointed guardian on the reservation in March 2019 and was reported missing in November 2020.

The Big Horn County Coroner has not officially released the identity of the person found on Wednesday near Garryowen.

Crow Chairman Frank White Clay wrote in a statement, identifying Mildred as the person discovered Wednesday, that he hoped she receives justice.

"Our hearts ache for the family and I lift them up in prayer. The entire community felt the loss when Mildred went missing and we feel it again today. My hope is that we can find closure, grieve together, and work to ensure that children are protected and supported on the Crow reservation and beyond. We want justice for this child and for all of the victims of the epidemic of people missing from reservations across the country," White Clay wrote.
