Also, from this article: http://www.krem.com/news/local/spok...-contacted-her-family-one-last-time/315275049 It's unclear to me if the daughter actually heard her mother's voice, or if she was just in the room. It is also unclear to me if the police actually talked to her. Articles say they did, but I have not seen a direct quote from LE saying they did. If she did not actually talk to her mother, but only heard about what was being said on the other end, and LE did not talk to her, this changes things for me. Changes things more in the direction of an elaborately planned hit, or just a plain old acquaintance murder.

ETA: Also, I assume the autopsy will show time of death.

Quoting my own post with this article that points to the fact that LE indeed seems to have spoken to her. Or, at least to a woman claiming to be her. http://okcfox.com/news/nation-world...-in-wash-after-cellphone-calls-from-car-trunk

Truly horrifying! I can't tell you how many times I've stopped at rest areas while on my own....but it's a lot. So scary.

I used to stop at them too. I used to take a quick nap in my car on long trips. :eek: But not any more. The statistics show that many of them are a hotbed of violence. Creeps have learned to lurk and wait for vulnerable victims. It is sickening.

And sexual trysts.

Not exactly remote, but depending on the traffic at the time it could have been quiet enough for there to be no passing drivers to see anything. I suspect it would only take a minute or two for a large man (per her description) to overpower her and put her in the trunk, and then there would only be a man standing by a car so nothing that looked out of the ordinary.

And how many times do unsuspecting drivers go back and rummage around in their trunks, taking out coolers or duffle bags etc? Probably quite a bit. That is why rest areas are such commonly targeted area these days. Very sad.

Right. There are people looking to sell their bodies and to sell drugs to keep drivers awake. Lots of scary people lurking in some rest areas these days.

I believe she said large w a black hoodie. but maybe he hit her over the head and she did see him and then he hit her again. she was then knocked out until later.

I think she may have been unconscious for part of that time.

But if she was unconscious, one would assume she was knocked out immediately....if that's the case how would she remember being put in the trunk and/or that her captor was large and dark skinned?

Okay, got it in my thick head now. The barefoot murderer on the run was LAST year, 2015.

I'm back to square one, with two possibilities:
* Random encounter with carjacker-kidnapper-murderer
* Suicide

I haven't read that she said he was dark skinned, but that he wore a dark hoodie. I could be wrong though, so please correct me if I am.

I've already been confused....now doubting everything I think I think. :)

For the question about a perp stopping for gas, you can get over 400 miles highway driving on a full tank of a Pontiac Grand Prix (listed at 28 mpg x 17 gal)

I've heard rumours for years but it wasn't until reading here I learned how common and how easy it is! And now with tinder and grindr it's probably easier and even more common.

Although this rest stop doesn't look like an ideal location for such encounters.

Gotta admit, that made me laugh.

Meet me at the moon this afternoon. (We used to call outhouses "moons.")

Okay, carry on.

Large man in a dark hoodie is all I've read too.

There was no description of his race just that he was a large man in a black hoodie. She could have seen him before he attacked her. She could have been in and out of consciousness and only woke up briefly for long enough to make the 10 minute call. I imagine it would be very hard to breathe in the back of a hot trunk and she had a head injury from the perp. He might not have needed to do anything else to kill her. She might have died by the time he abandoned the car.

Very possibly. However my understanding is that when people are knocked out they are rarely out for more than a few minutes. Here in the UK the first aid standard is that if someone is unconscious for more than 5 minutes or so then you automatically call an ambulance because it's a hospital job since being unconscious for more than a couple of minutes suggests a significant head injury, with the risk of bleeding in the brain and brain swelling. It's possible that she might have drifted into and out of consciousness during the journey but I don't think she could have been unconscious for very long if she was able, hours later, to have a 10 minute phone conversation with her husband and daughter.

Did she say dark skinned? I thought she said he was wearing a dark hoodie.

RSBM

I thought she (Rita) said the captor had a dark hoodie/jacket on ?

Nevermind-- just read TTF's post :)

<snip>

The Great Falls woman told her family at 10:25 p.m. Tuesday that “a large man in a black hoodie” hit her on the head and put her into a trunk of a car at a rest stop near Wolf Creek on Tuesday morning. She wasn’t even sure if she was in her car or not.

Husband, BM, and daughter, RM, had police on the other line as they spoke to Maze in what would be her final hours. They relayed what she told them to police, but the information came too late.
