This seems pretty elaborate and over the top for a suicide. Not saying I don't believe it, but it just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

So is the earlier account of the "POI" pumping gas at the 2 gas stations completely untrue? There is no suspect?

Asked if news outlets should question Maze’s kidnapping narrative, Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich replied Thursday, “Yes, you should.”

“You should hesitate until we actually find out what is going on … because they’re starting to back away from some statements over there,” Knezovich said, referring to the federal and Montana authorities investigating Maze’s death.

Two shell casings in the trunk. Officer heard shots. One gunshot wound. Hmmm

And blood outside the car. Sounds like signs of a struggle to me.

Who can tell? The report above says they found the POI on surveillance video and cleared them as not being connected to the case.

Argh! I wish they would just tell us what their suspicions are about the situation!

Blood outside the car could be blood dripped through the car onto the ground. That's what I've been assuming.

But it is unclear what "outside the car" means.

Dumb question....do two shell casings mean two shots fired? I know nothing about guns.

It sounds exactly like Borderline Personality Disorder to me.

Or she was bleeding before she got in/was put in the trunk.

It still doesn't add up to me though. For both casings to be in the trunk, the gun had to be shot from very close if not from inside the trunk IMO.

  • #335
Was the trunk latched? If she did shoot herself, she would have had to do it IN the closed trunk, wouldn't she? Too weird.JMO

Yes, that is another possibility.

Or that someone else was bleeding.

We don't know.

I wonder if reporters know they can ask questions to clarify what is told to them.

Nancy Grace said the back window was busted out of the car when police found it. So that answers my earlier question of whether police did that to get into her car or not. If she did this herself, why would she break the window? Forensics should tell if Rita broke the window or if it was a perp, IMO.

We don't but police have said they have a POI. How else would they have a POI if not from CCTV footage? And if they suspected suicide why would they even say they have a POI?

I am with you on this Gardener.

Imo, this is exactly what it looks like.

I have thought about Rita and her family so much today. I cant even comprehend what it must have felt like telling her loved one that she loved them and them telling her the same and it would be the last thing they ever said to each other. Her husband must have felt so helpless. It is such a heartbreaking case. These rest stops although most are very clean have always given me the creeps. I never stop at one when traveling. Sometimes I will notice at some even during midday there may be one or two vehicles there only. Even though most sit close to the highway they are eerily isolated somehow within the rest stop itself.

I have never heard of someone committing suicide this way knowing the police were already involved and looking for them. If she wanted to go somewhere and kill herself she could have easily done that without all of this trauma inflicted on her family. I haven't seen anything that even makes me think she was suicidal.

This isn't the first case where a victim was at a rest stop like this one and wound up being murdered by a total stranger.

I believe LE may already have a good lead. They wouldn't say this case was a homicide out of thin air with nothing to base it on. They wouldn't do that to her family. If anything was telling them that was a possibility they would have left the investigation open and said they are doing a death investigation to determine the COD/MOD first before going forward. They don't come out to the public and state they have a POI when they believe someone has committed suicide.

Imo they have seen someone (POI) on camera footage that is suspicious to them. It may be some place he stopped and he was driving her car but Rita was never seen in the camera footage.

The only thing that bothers me is not locking her vehicle especially if she had her gun in it but unfortunately other victims have had a false sense of security too when they were in a particular area.

I feel very hopeful they will arrest someone soon.

It's just my thoughts, but I think the day might have started out as something different from suicide. Maybe a kind of depression, despondency and hopelessness which worked it's way through to a decision. A plan that included elements that would absolve oneself of checking out and give a chance to say good-bye.

A Ruger would spit out the casing to the right side, possibly as much as 5 feet if nothing is in the way.
