I can see that being the case with a black person, but from what I've seen there are quite a few reservations in that part of the US so perhaps a Native American wouldn't stand out so much except for the height she mentioned. 6' 5" would stand out anywhere except in a basketball team.

Just for general interest, I drove through a Blackfoot reserve in Alberta near the Montana border and the young men are exceptionally tall, they all look like basketball players, and that was confirmed by a well-over 6 foot guide who said it's because they now grow up with good nutrition.

Why on earth would a kidnapper risk being pulled over on the freeway with a woman in the trunk of his car? He or she had to be speeding to be at a gas station in Ritzville at 9:55 after being in Post Falls at 9. Unless someone got the timeline wrong or is screwing up on the MST versus the PST again.

Didn't I read that there was blood found outside the car, and dogs tracked a scent leaving the scene?

Yes, this was even reported on Nancy Grace, even with a specific direction of travel. Dogs tracked someone heading North on foot from the car. Strangely, that detail was backtracked on/not reported by most news sources.

I recall seeing it in an article last night (I didn't watch NG), but then it just sort of disappeared.

Hints at suicide in the press are getting stronger: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/rita-ma...-claims-of-montana-woman-found-dead-in-trunk/

Police are calling into question the account of a Montana woman who called her family Tuesday and said she had been kidnapped and was in the trunk of her car. She was later found dead in the car 325 miles away near Spokane International Airport in Washington, but authorities in Washington say they’re not convinced her death wasn’t a suicide.

Rochelle Maze told the Spokesman-Review that she believes her mother, a longtime cook at a Great Falls elementary school, was abducted.

“She did not hit herself, stuff herself in the truck and drive all the way to Spokane and shoot herself,” Maze told the paper.
Authorities found the keys in the car’s ignition and a purse in the front seat, the paper reports. There was blood on the ground and a $20 bill nearby.
“I believe they shot her and left the gun and keys in there to make it look like she killed herself,” Rochelle Maze told the paper. “I know she did not.”
But Knezovich told the paper people should hesitate to call Maze’s death a murder “until we actually find out what is going on.”

Her poor daughter. :(

Kidnapping report under investigation: http://www.seattletimes.com/nation-...ans-kidnapping-report-is-under-investigation/

An investigation is raising questions about the death of a woman who reported being kidnapped at a Montana rest stop and spending hours in the trunk of her car. The body of 47-year-old Rita Maze of Great Falls was found early Wednesday near the Spokane International Airport. She had been shot, but the medical examiner listed the cause of death as pending.

More questions than answers: http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2016/09/09/us/ap-us-kidnapped-woman.html?_r=0

As investigators try to piece together how a Montana woman ended up dead in her car near Spokane International Airport, they're running into more questions than answers. The Spokesman-Review reports court documents say 47-year-old Ritz Maze was found in her closed trunk early Wednesday with a handgun and two spent shell casings next to her. Her purse and keys were in the locked car.

What I find hard to understand if this is a suicide, is the overwhelming fear her daughter and husband suffered by her staging this as a kidnapping. I do understand her not wanting them to know she committed suicide but she could've been killed in a vehicular "accident" without causing them the additional terror and pain IMO. Not only that but she HEARD the terror they were going through.

I agree, that is hard to understand. I think she thought she was sparing them - and I do think she was protecting her legacy - and it gave everyone a chance to say "I love you," but the family must have been in such a panic. Maybe she didn't do a car accident because of the possibility she would survive and the possibility that it would hurt a lot. A gun shot isn't painless, but it's quick.

Painful situation.

I wonder if there is anyone else in her family who committed suicide?

a vehicular "accident" is not guaranteed death, a gun shot is,

my money is on suicide, the phone call was a chance to say bye....without actually saying bye

Confused. Did the patrol dog track the "POI" going north FROM the place he was seen or FROM the crime scene (the car) ? Anyone have a map? ty JMO

IMO it's hard to say without knowing her. I assume she wanted to say goodbye and convince them she'd been carjacked and kidnapped to save them the guilt or pain, but maybe it was something else. Maybe she was resentful about having to make the trip alone. Maybe she wanted to hear in their voices exactly how upset they were. Maybe the phone call was a test. Maybe she'd been crying out for help for awhile and no one stepped up to help her. Maybe she wanted to punish them for something.

So many things people do when they attempt suicide don't make sense.

I don't mean to imply she was a bad person - just considering the possibilities.

My niece is 6'7" and she would agree. People stop dead in their tracks to gawk at her. It's probably not quite so bad with males, but I think people still notice.

I'm still stuck on life insurance. Usually suicide from what I understand and sadly have had to deal with is not entitled to life insurance. She really could have thought this would work to save her family from financial hardship (if they have any) idk if she has a policy just can't get this out of my mind. Imo.

The supervisor didn't want to contaminate their crime scene with a lot of people until a patrol dog had a chance to track the suspect, last detected heading north on foot. Deputies then opened the trunk and found Maze's body inside.

http://www.kxly.com/news/spokane-ne...ends-in-spokane-murder-investigation/41567928

That is what is confusing. The person was not detected at the crime scene but at the quickstop so he would have been tracked from there TO the car (by backtracking his movement)......I think that LE wanted an untouched scene until they could ascertain that tracking led to the car. If it did, they would not have let him go. JMO

Can someone PLEASE explain to me how and why this could be in any way a suicide? I'm just catching up now, but I haven't seen it explained.

I know stranger things have happened, but this sounds preposterous to me. What a slap in the face to her family to be fueling such an ugly rumor. Why are so many of you stuck on this? What about her life leading up to this gives you any reason to believe this is a possibility? (Again, I'm still catching up, so my questions may be answered as I continue reading ...)
