FBI breaks down missing person search methods as local efforts rally for Sa'Wade Birdinground

Justin Dubail spoke with ASAC Rhys Williams, who runs the criminal branch at the Salt Lake FBI Division, to learn more about their investigative process. Williams explained the FBI's steps in missing persons cases, especially when searches extend over time.

One of the cases the FBI is working on is the disappearance of Sa'wade Birdinground, missing from the Crow Reservation for over three months. Williams said the BAU and CARD were involved early in this case, emphasizing that it remains open and active. Due to the rural location, the FBI relies heavily on community assistance for information.

Nearly six months after 13-year-old Sa’Wade Birdinground disappeared from her home overnight in Garryowen , her father, Wade Birdinground, refuses to give up hope.

Before her disappearance, Birdinground said Sa’Wade was thriving in school and considering trying out basketball. He remains hopeful that one day she will return home.

“I pray every day. I wake up, I ask the Lord for help. I tell Him to share my strength with her. I will not give up,” Birdinground said. “She's alive. I know it. I just gotta find her.”

Sa'Wade Birdinground went missing from her home in Garryowen on October 6, 2024. Now, the FBI has announced it is increasing the reward for information leading to her recovery from $10,000 to $15,000.

"The FBI remains unwavering in our commitment to bring Sa'Wade home and provide answers to her family," FBI Billings Special Agent in Charge Justin Gerkin said. "By increasing the reward in this case, we are urging anyone with information, no matter how small, to do the right thing and come forward. Our partnerships with the Crow Tribe, law enforcement, and the community, are critical and together we will continue to pursue every lead until Sa'Wade is found."
