Aruna Shanbaug, a nurse who has been in a vegetative state for 42 years after her brutal rape, has died in a Mumbai hospital of pneumonia. She was 67.

Shanbaug was a staff nurse at the KEM (King Edward Memorial) Hospital when she was attacked by sweeper Sohanlal Bharta Valmiki on the evening of November 27,1973. To immobilise her, he wrapped a dog chain around Shanbaug’s neck and yanked her back with it...

Her rapist Valmiki served a seven-year sentence in prison after being convicted of robbery and attempted murder but not rape as an official deleted parts of her medical report that showed Shanbaug was sodomised.

Aruna was engaged when she was attacked but has had no family visitors for several years. Her sister in Mumbai died in 2013. Her case triggered a national debate about euthanasia and a book was written about her case.

Kavita Krishnan, a women's right activist said that the widespread attention generated by Shanbaug's case hasn't led to reduction in sexual violence against women in India... "I hope while we remember her we also have a serious discussion about the safety of women not just at work but at home and on the streets," she said.

There has been an outpouring of tributes on social media following the death of Shanbaug.
