Murder confession

A person confessed to me they killed someone. They gave some vivid details about the event itself, but no details about victim name, exact place or time.. I know possible general area and year range... Where can I start?

Anyone here has any expertise in being able to help to figure out how I can find more details... I don't just want to go to police with some vague report that they will probably close after they question the perp and perp denies everything and then the perp will know I contacted the police and then I'm at risk...

to be honest - with such little actual detail i fear that the police would struggle to even begin an investigation.

perhaps keeping your powder dry and revisiting with the person in question (maybe try to coax a few more details)

Perhaps you could start by giving us the details that the person has given you. Someone may be able to link the vivid details to a crime, or unexplained death. Feel free to DM me

Regarding the murder confession you asked about, you could do some preliminary general online first by searching with the few details you have. That may give you some answers of what crime it might match.
Then you could search Websleuths with more exact details to see if there is a discussion thread about the crime.
Websleuths requires that any thread started about a specific crime must include a link to a mainstream media news source that is about the crime OR a link to an official law enforcement source about it.
