Yeah, just crunching the numbers of deceased on the Wikipedia page for Myanmar alone a few hours ago, being conservative (rounding down and not counting missing or trapped or unrecovered), I came up with a rough figure of 1422. And that's going to be changing by the hour, and many of the rural, remote, or war disturbed places aren't going to be reporting numbers to the junta or organisations like the Red Cross - they're going to just be trying to survive and rescue others with what little resources they have, and burying their dead (or performing whatever rites are appropriate or able to be done in the circumstances).

It seems that there is a bit of a conundrum.

Myammar is trying to rescue people with very little heavy equipment to help them do so.
Countries like Australia do not want to give direct assistance to the Myammar military govt, as we won't legitimise them. (Myammar has been in civil war since 2021.)
So we (and others) are giving money to the Red Cross for immediate humanitarian aid.

Wong added that Australia “does not provide any direct funding to the military regime and takes proactive steps to ensure our assistance does not legitimise the military regime in Myanmar” and described the “ongoing crisis in Myanmar” as “a major threat to stability in our region”.

Australia to provide $1.25m to Myanmar

"Ravaged by four years of civil war, Myanmar is ill-prepared to cope with the destruction brought by Friday's massive earthquake.

But the bloody conflict sparked by the 2021 military coup has brought the country's infrastructure, healthcare system and power network to their knees.

Much of the country was already plagued by a punishing mix of conflict, poverty and instability after the civil war that left 3.5 million people displaced and smashed the economy.

Much of Myanmar is controlled by a shifting patchwork of junta forces, ethnic armed groups and pro-democracy partisans."

Myanmar quake: a nation unprepared for disaster

Big number increase, as to be expected, on the Wikipedia page. The source articles in the footnotes are not in English, so I can't link directly. The Democratic Voice of Burma is saying 2600+ dead. The junta is still saying around 1700. Both are far from final numbers with many, many buildings still unable to be fully excavated due to lack of equipment, expertise, and basic utilities like electricity.

Crematoriums are completely overwhelmed, some families are having to cremate their deceased loved ones in the streets.

The junta is now reporting 2056 dead.

The Democratic Voice of Burma is saying 3000+.

Four were pulled alive from the Sky Villa apartments in Mandalay, including a pregnant woman and a child. That's the building where 90+ were trapped a couple of days ago.

''BANGKOK — For most of the day, somberness clouded over a makeshift shelter set up for grief-stricken relatives of dozens of workers who remain missing at the building collapse in Bangkok. They huddled together, a short distance from the rubble, awaiting news for their loved ones to be found.
But for a few minutes, their faces broke out in smiles, as a group of fluffy, playful golden retrievers approached the waiting relatives on a break from the dogs’ rescue mission.''

Search and rescue operations continued on Tuesday (April 1) at the collapsed building site in Bangkok, where 74 people remain missing. With realistic chances of survival diminishing after 72 hours, rescue teams scaled the wreckage, with search dogs on standby to detect any signs of life. Despite the relentless efforts, some relatives have begun to accept the grim reality of the situation. Meanwhile, officials from the K9 Unit and Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) hope that bringing their dogs to meet the relatives of the victims will bring them some kind of comfort.

I fear that the impact on the people of Myanmar is going to be dreadful. They're so isolated because of the war, and international support that would usually come to aid in the time of a natural disaster won't be available.

Mosques, temples, schools, hospitals and government buildings are amongst those where there are known fatalities or where people are trapped.

Despite my fears the military junta controlling Myanmar would not be open to aid, the opposite is the case. The Senior General essentially in a press release said "we need all the help, please send us any help you can". So it's happening as fast as possible.

Bbm.
Was going to ask why in the first bolded ... and you answered it in the second bolded, thanks !
Thankful and relieved the military junta is accepting help.
Imo.

They have been restricting movement of aid and aid workers, and even shot at a convoy yesterday, but this brand new development is a good one:

There are some images in a couple of the above articles of the Sky Villa apartments. It's no wonder that so many are probably deceased under them, and remarkable that any have been saved from them alive. They look like phone books, laid out three in a line, ending with the sole surviving block. They didn't fall, tilt or tip. They collapsed neatly on themselves without any apparent spaces between the debris. I know Mandalay and Sagaing were right in the thick of it, but I suspect poor construction, as seems to be the case with the tower in Bangkok, which preliminary testing suggests was being made with substandard materials.

4390 dead, now, according to one source. Lowest number is still the junta, at around 3000.
