Mystery of FL man who awoke speaking Swedish, claims no memory of documented past

I did a search of public databases for his first, middle, and surname with the age parameters of 60-61.

It came up with one possible male of that name that is listed as have lived in Miami FL and Kentwood LA. (Those places are not always accurate on these types of databases)...

so I check out the names that were associated with the Michael T Boatwright and it showed an Albert and Virginia same surname.

I searched for Albert in Florida in the news archives and found:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...AJ&pg=4624,6467444&dq=albert-boatwright&hl=en

The obit is for an Albert with the same surname as the mystery man. It is from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune - Sep 25, 1997. In the obit it lists the name Virginia as his surviving widow. Also listed are two daughters and "a son, Michael, of Sweden".

I think that whomever is looking for his next of kin might want to have a look at this obit.

A quick search in the white pages lists a daughter of the deceased man above as living in Kentwood LA. (I'm not calling her lol).

People on VA or social security disability barely get enough to live on, so I don't see why he'd lie or fake unless maybe for more immediate help. If he turns out to have told tall tales in the past then he probably does have true problems going on.

He's 61 and lived and worked in Sweden so I think the social worker should find out if he qualifies for pension according to the Swedish system.

http://www.nordsoc.org/Sweden/Pension/
Pension

There is no particular pension age in the general pension system in Sweden. A person is entitled to draw a pension from the age of 61 and it can be postponed as long as a person wishes.
Sweden’s general pension system

Here you can read about Sweden’s general old age pension system and how you earn your pension. The basis for belonging to the Swedish general pension system is that you are covered by Swedish social insurance. You can do this by either working or living in Sweden, and being recorded in the population register in Sweden. If you stop working, or begin working in a different country, or move from Sweden, you still have the pension entitlements that you earned in Sweden. The pension system comprises of three parts – guarantee pension, income pension and premium pension.

I sent the potential next of kin contact to a reporter that covered this story along with all the other info I found to support why I think this might be his next of kin. We'll see if it pans out or we might not. Who knows if she'll contact me.

Can you see when the profile was created? If it was after he was found someone could have set up the profile for him I suppose

I would have to become his friend to see that information. His profile is pretty locked, but seeing as he only has the one post I would assume that it was after he was found. I am interested if any one has contacted his FB friend, Veronica...

But could he have been born over there, then brought here at a young age? Maybe was adopted at a young age?

This is a local story here as the man is at our local, Desert Regional Hospital.

Boatwright was born in Florida, not Sweden. It is thought he studied Swedish in school because he speaks with no regional accent. IIRC, he did spend some time in Sweden as a youth.

But he was later married, fathered a son and was divorced here in the States. His ex-wife seems to want nothing to do with him.

After his divorce, Boatwright (or Ek) spent more than a decade in Japan and China, teaching English and designing software graphics.

Nobody knows how or why he came here to Palm Springs (the real one in CA, not the fake one in FL).

***

BTW, our local paper reported that they have tried to "trick" him by throwing sentences in English into the conversation with his Swedish translator, but thus far Mr. Ek has shown no sign of understanding English.

OH Yay! I was thinking of starting a thread for this guy, and fortunately found someone else already had. I find this quite an interesting case -- this being in a fugue, and wondering if this might explain a couple other missing persons cases I've followed.

Anyway, now I'm going to go back and read everything everyone has to say, and the research you guys have been doing.

OK, caught up on the threads and links. Here's a timeline of his time in Sweden:
1981: Moves to Sweden for the first time.

1985: Returns to Sweden after four years absence

1991: Leaves Sweden

1997: Returns to Sweden (after a long time in an "obscure place").

January 1997 to November 2003: he lived in Hagen Band, at property named Höräfsan 1. This corresponds to Stjärnsundsgatan 25-29, the same street as he states on his website.)

2003: Emigrated from Sweden for good. According to his own data, he moves first to Japan and then to China, where he was living as a teacher and illustrator.

1) The luggage he had with him when found in his hotel room (a duffel bag w/ sports clothes, a backpack, and 5 tennis rackets) sounds rather sparse for someone returning from Asia, after having lived there for about a decade. Normally, one tends to accumulate stuff. Was he coming to the U.S. for a quick trip, intending to return to Asia? If so, where's the rest of his stuff?

2) He was teaching kindergarten at that one school in Zhuhai, China -- but they're saying he hasn't been there in a year. So...what's he been doing in the past year? His passport should give some clue to that -- if he were teaching elsewhere in China, he'd have a visa stamp in there for whatever province it was.

3) From this link, he claims to hold a Bachelor's degree from U of Michigan (and a Masters from Stockholm U) -- I wonder if either of those degrees has been confirmed? http://korstemplar.cgarena.com/

4) Interesting that he already revised his personal history while living in China (although still remembering English and his own name). Has he now taken his "reinvention" a step further? http://www.deltabridges.com/news/zhuhai-news/cultures-mix-awards-fete-betty-lin
Many people go to China (and other Asian destinations) and get work teaching English who have a "past." The schools rarely do any sort of background checks. And, lots of people forge a diploma (Chinese schools rarely ask for transcripts, just the diploma). I suppose one could also reinvent themselves-- fabricate a different past history -- everyone pretty much takes everyone else at face value.

5) http://www.mydesert.com/article/201...Michael-Boatwright-s-sister-located-Louisiana
His sister has been located. She hasn’t spoken to him in about 10 years – didn’t know if he were dead or alive, and had no way to reach him last year when their mother died. Said he’d always been a wanderer, and only showed up when he needed something (like money).

6) People who have known him (from above links) tend to describe him as "flighty" -- he seems very absorbed in this fantasy world -- maybe to the point that he's now completely lost touch with reality?

7) He's seemed to have held a variety of odd jobs -- English teacher, diver, personal aide for disabled -- these sorts of jobs don't require a lot of training (well, you're supposed to have a BA to teach in Asia, but it's easy to fake it). Sounds like he's enjoyed bouncing around the world supporting himself however he can, and hanging out with folks that share his interests in fantasy and sci fi (Japan really big into that, and he apparently found lots of "feudal" buddies in Sweden). I'm not buying the archeologist thing(although I suppose he could have been working as some sort of aide on a dig somewhere). He does appear quite talented in the arts -- I would expect that if the U of Michigan degree is for real, that it would have been in Graphic Arts. Hmmm...he's from Florida -- how did he end up in Michigan? Wonder if that's where he learned Swedish?

The place is Bandhagen.

http://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/article17139918.ab
He's given another interview and says that he was found unconscious in the bathtub and had a bump in the back of the head. In the room there was a cover for a computer, but no computer. He says someone says he had a lot of money with him but none was found and wonders if he was robbed. He's trying to study and relearn English. The article suggests that his stay had to do with the qualifiers that were played at the big ATP tournament in Indian Wells at the time. He says he might have been a coach for Chinese female players but the Chinese officials aren't saying anything. He wants a job as a tennis coach and wants to get out of the hospital with community support.
A head injury would explain a degree of retrograde amnesia prior to the injury but from what he says it doesn't appear that he has any trouble remembering things that happened afterwards and it is unusual for a case of such severe retrograde amnesia in head injury not to be accompanied with difficulty in learning and remembering new information as well.

An ex gf whom he was with from 1981 to 1984 says MB told her that he was plagued by his past as a a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War. I thought the navy said he was an aviation mechanic? or is that code for a helicopter pilot? She says he was employed as a röjdykare (different sources translate it as a frogman or a clearance diver) This is the gf who gave the press the diving photos. She was very impressed by his kind eyes and still appears to be but she wouldn't go into the reasons why they broke up.

This has got to be his youtube channel. Last actvty five months ago which is about right if he lost hs memory in the end of February. He likes Northern Exposure, Ally McBeal, tennis videos, elves and medieval tributes, Japanese or Chinese videos, graphic designing channels. ...And videos about death and rebirth, near death experiences, ufos and paranormal stuff, reincarnation regression, conspiracy theories, antroposophy...

Even on Youtbe three years ago he said he was from Sweden.
Hej, IS. Yes I'm from Sweden but I'm living in China. Trying to wake up a few people here as well. They really have absolutely no access to any kind of real and important information. Anyway, if you go to their website you can find out pretty much what you need to know about that situation. And you can also check out the Project Camelot interview with the guys on site in Egypt. Hope this helped. Namaste;-)

I am a 50 year old former Steiner student from Sweden and am married to a beautiful, intelligent African woman from Ethiopia. Just by your comments I can tell you must be from America and typically have no knowledge of what you speak! And I am so very glad that I had the opportunity for such an enriching education, which provided me the perfect foundation for getting my Masters Degree in Earth Science.
The age and nationality are wrong so I guess the rest of it might be false too but that's another wife and occupation to add to the list... a student -graduate f Earth Science (OMG, doesn't everybody tell the truth on the internet...? i'm so shocked...)

Interesting that he implies that Americans are some other people who are stupid and now he has completely reinvented himself as an European.

I can SOOO feel your pain my dear friend! I have about 2 weeks left and then.... I have only one thing I can say of encouragement to you and that is: That which makes us, us never dies. And when I get to wherever I'm going and if I see your grandmother, I will tell her that I saw this beautiful dedication and give her a GIANT HUG from you! Don't worry. She is very fine!
This was in response to a person whose grandma was dying. I think he clearly implies that he's got about two weeks to live. I suppose he might have been misdiagnosed with something but if not he may like to make up a little drama.

Hi everyone. I'm an ex-pat swede living in China and up until about 6 weeks ago I had no problems with my internet connections, getting around the GFW (Great FireWall) of China, using my Strong VPN service.

Someone with his usual username had this to say in
korstemplar commented on Copenhagen climate change conference: 'Fourteen days to seal history's judgment on this generation'.

PLAIN and SIMPLE...If you believe anything the MAINSTREAM has to say about anything important, you can bet it's not TRUE!!

The only way to find anything believable nowadays is to educate yourself and find out what's really happening! Come on, WAKE UP PEOPLE!

Paranoid?
if he was going off the deep end and lived in a world of conspiracies in which the governments lie all the time and the scientists lie all the time and you can't trust anything the thought that the hospital and the Swedish idyll represent something safe starts to gain some credence.

But maybe he's just a huge troll.

I really wish that someone would either verify or debunk whether he ever studied or was employed at the universities he claims to have and if he ever received any degree for anything.

Oh wow, everything you pulled up is priceless.

I think the best remedy for his "forgotten" English is to boot him out of the hospital and drop him off at the nearest homeless shelter. I wager he'll get his English back in 3 days tops.

Yeah... if it's him in the Somalian Psyops video in March (and I bet it is because it seems just his cup f tea and because the same user's videos are in his Youtube history), the video is in English and the comment is in English...

ETA: Scratch that, his Youtube history shows he made the comment seven months ago so it's probably just that the blog site copied Youtube comments and they show the date of the blog post, not the date of the original comment. He is not as stupid as that.

http://mobil.dn.se/nyheter/varlden/jag-vet-vem-michael-boatwright-ar/

Anther former friend/landlady who knew him for a couple of years in Österlen, Skåne in the nineties says he used to borrow her horses for the tournaments and describes him as a globetrotter who came and went as he pleased. He worked in the home services for the elderly needing care. He had told her he'd been in England before coming to Sweden and according to her recollection he had worked as a diving instructor and done underwater welding. (It's not clear if this is just what he told her or if she knew it from somewhere else.) She doesn't seem too sure but thinks that Johan Ek was one of his alteregoes for the medieval thing. She doesn't believe he's faking it, he was too kind and not a good enough liar to fool the doctors for so long. (Although maybe he was just a good enough liar to fool her too?)

I don't believe it's anything neurological. There is no neurological syndrome that properly explains why he lost one of the languages he was fluent in but has retained a near perfect command of another language he may have learned in his adulthood. His amnesia symptoms don't really fit anything neurological either. Most of the time your name and your identity is so deeply ingrained that even if you don't remember what happened two minutes ago you recognize your own name. In severe dementia that may go as well but if it was as bad as that I wouldn't expect him to know his Swedish and to be able to facebook anymore. And nothing that I can think of that explains how someone who has lived in several countries in his adulthood remembers just one of them selectively when it's not in any logical temporal connection (forgetting events immediately before an injury or lesion or remembering one's youth but not the later events).

A dissociative state is a possibility although I think it is quite rare to forget a language you were fluent in even in dissociative states.

Or else he's faking it.
The way the people who knew him seem to remember him telling something different about what he's been doing for living points that way imo. The navy thing is apparently documented but it doesn't come up in his Chinese bio for the prize and his Swedish friends don't seem to know a thing about it or the graphic design experience. Depending on who you believe he's a diving instructor and an archaeologist and an underwater welder and an English teacher and an assistant in elderly care... Okay so he may have been a jack of all trades but it could be that some of those aren't quite true and he just didn't want his friends to know what he did for a living

I really don’t know if he is a kind man, or a great con man. NO CLUE...
I can reference my won Dad who would say he was a Taylor, but he was a real jack of all trades....
He never told people he can build furniture, build a house, electrically wire it, and do the plumbing and gardening too.
His income came from cloths business, and he never bragged about ALL he can do....what he really did and could do
was TRULY another story, Some friends did know, most had no clue.

So it is totaly possible this man was a jack of all trades,
maybe this guy only told what people needed to know at the time.
UNLESS HE DID SOMETHING REALLY BAD I cant see why he would pretend to NOT know who he is?
