A New Jersey man who was initially praised for trying to save his neighbor in a July fire is now being accused of killing her in the blaze.

William Ahle, 70, was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree felony murder, first-degree burglary, and second-degree aggravated arson, the Union County Prosecutor's Office said in a news release on Wednesday.

hmm, this one could be interesting to follow. I am curious what led investigators to believe the fire was intentionally set, that the neighbor was responsible and what Ms. Cranwell's COD was determined to be.

Dang, what happened between these two neighbors. The suspect is retired sergeant.

I'm getting a clearer picture now. Apparently he stated he was out walking his dog when he saw the fire. But this quote from the article stood out strong.

“He was known as the mayor of the street. Because he’s very helpful. He looks out for a lot of people around the neighborhood.”

Well I suppose that might prevent neighbors from being real chatty about this case as noted in the OP article.

He told officials he had been walking his dog at 1:30 a.m. when he noticed the fire and rushed into Cranwell’s open garage in an attempt to rescue her, but was pushed back by the flames, WABC reported.
New Jersey man who claimed he tried to rescue elderly neighbor from fire charged with her murder — and arson

“I gave him a big hug and everything,” the victim's daughter said of William Ahle after he claimed he tried to rescue her mother

McManus said that looking back at that night, “nothing made sense.”

“They said the fire was contained in the bedroom, that it started right in front of her bedroom door and she was trapped in the bedroom,” she said. “In fact, someone from the fire or the police told me at the time, ‘Your mom’s house must have been really insulated — it was such a hot fire, and it didn’t spread to anywhere in the house.’ ”
Man Once Hailed As Hero for Trying to Rescue Neighbor from Burning Home Now Charged in Her Murder

So he claims he got burned trying to access the house through open garage door and was "pushed back" by the intense flames but fire dept said the fire was confined to the upper floor outside her bedroom door. That is certainly not similar in any way.

How many fires start outside a bedroom door? The kitchen, yes, the garage, yes, near faulty electrical items, yes, but "outside her bedroom door"? I'll bet the fire dept finds an accelerant was used. And I think his burns were from the fire he, IMO, set. That's messed up.
