"any action taken regarding a ransom is ultimately up to the family"

This is vague. Could mean "if the family sends payment, that is up to them" or "the video released last night was a production by the family and their handlers".

JMO.
I think it means both, and the FBI stated that whatever the family decides is their decision alone to make and the FBI will provide any advice, assistance, etc. the family may want if the family asks them.

Bbm.
Sorry wasn't able to listen.
Who asked the question in bolded ?
Tia.
It sounds like no one at all is ruled out yet.
Jmo.
I don’t know why, but I’m starting to feel he’s involved here more than before. Someone knew where the camera(s) were and disconnected one and a floodlight. It could be a worker or someone else who has been there before I suppose. When the sheriff said we’re reviewing camera videos from other neighborhoods, it made me take note. Obviously they are, but
It just felt weird to me to say that. Also everyone is still a suspect at this time. Seriously, it could be someone else and I might change my mind, but not yet. Street cameras , home security cameras, neighbors cameras, cellphone data, car data I’m sure is being analyzed, proof of where he/they were etc. I don’t know who else could be involved that helped to remove and relocate N outside of A, maybe a friend/business associate/shady business partner who is owed money? I don’t want to see he/they (maybe A) are involved, but something feels off to not consider this.’MOO

Would it be illegal for LE to plant a listening device in someone's home?
No idea, but good question and perhaps that was why they opened the crime scene back up to family?

I wouldn't pay to upload data about me and my household to a third party cloud. It's surveillance, not security.
Why bother with inside cameras, if she had no alarms on doors , windows etc?

i don't see how it's possible that the SIL does this without AG being involved because she'd know if he was gone in the middle of the night and either had to act as his alibi or has already reported that to the police (which i assume she didn't do because this case would look very different if that were the case). and i feel like it wouldn't be hard to nail down spouses lying for each other - i have to imagine it's fairly obvious to LE right away, even if they can't immediately act on it.

so, they could still be investigating this behind the scenes. maybe the circus over the ransom note is just to throw the potential suspects off LE's scent (i really don't think this is the case, what a massive waste of resources) or maybe it goes deeper and there was like, a hit hired or something? i just don't know...
Depends for example if AG takes certain medication she might not know if SIL slips away during the night. I take meds for a blocked nerve in my neck and seriously you can come with a marching band through my bedroom and i just continue sleeping.

Would it be because the Olympics are starting this weekend and it is Super Bowl Sunday? More publicity? I personally and sadly don’t think she is still alive, but maybe perp wants publicity and attention?
Yes. I think the ransom note author is definitely publicity seeking.

In my opinion, this thirst for attention and publicity is at least, in part, the reason he/she/they chose TMZ (in particular) + media outlets (generally) as his channel to bring the ransom notes to the family, LE, & the public, simultaneously.

Some thoughts regarding the news presser in no particular order:
- I have a ring camera, but no subscription. When I would randomly open the app and look at live view, it would always show me a quick clip of the last person to have been at the door. For the last several months, this has not been the case. I’m unsure why this changed. But I question if this was the case for Nancy’s ring camera as well.
The camera at Nancy's front door was a battery operated Nest camera. It has a 3 hour limit for free video event storage, then overwrites. Not sure what the other camera brands she had installed as the Sheriff has not given out that information.

LE likely downloaded all family cell phones to try to track cell phone whereabouts that night. Assume family consented to this as LE said they are being cooperative.

I'm not sure but I don't think so, as I remember less high profile cases where they have done so.

But, what would he have done with her to keep her alive? Where?

LA man arrested for allegedly sending texts messages to Nancy Guthrie daughter and son in law members asking about sending bitcoin. The man, Derrick Callella, says he just wanted to see if family would respond. Criminal complaint says the texts are not linked to Feb 2 ransom demand.

Unless she was asleep and didn't know he left and returned. He could have left all devices at home to not be tracked. Not sure about vehicle, if it can be tracked somehow
Some people take strong sleep medicines and DO NOT wake up all night... just saying

To me it sounds like they were, but the images weren't stored anywhere so nothing for LE to go back and actually see.
When my ring doorbell goes off because of my phone being linked to it, I also get a response on my phone that there’s motion detected. Also a rabbit will detected and it will say it’s a person.

Two ransom deadlines. Days apart. Ransom note indicates knowledge of Nancy and her home. Details no one else would know.

IMO the perp thinks they are smarter than everyone else, and the ransom letter writer is the perp, and they are trying to make it look like a kidnapping for ransom, when most probably it was SA, and the kidnapping ruse is a cover-up, because the perp felt remorse after his crime, and can't get caught because it will cause him further shame and embarrassment. Kind of a "Hey look over there, not here" type scenario.
I just find this theory unlikely. If you have committed a crime, why commit another crime (send a hoax ransom note as a cover story)? That would be an additional charge if/when caught, and would actually increase the chances of getting caught. I feel either the ransom demand is real, or it is just a crime of opportunity (someone with the technical capabilities to make an anonymous ransom demand, deciding to do so when hearing of the missing news anchor’s mother. But has no ties to her going missing.)

or knows where a spare key is located?

Excellent point.

My adult daughter knows where our spare key is hidden outside our house and also the 4 digit locked combination is to gain access to the door key.

If they know the time of the “person detected” alert, how can they not know which camera it came from? Alerts are always linked to a specific device. Or are they trying to flush somebody out being vague about the camera situation? Hoping to spook the perp into thinking there were more than what he/she was aware of? But then why would they say they’ve been unable to extract data as it’s been overwritten? This is so confusing.
Vague because they don't want to spook her into thinking they have video.
