What we know

  • The FBI released surveillance photos and videos of a potential subject in the investigation into the disappearance of “TODAY” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother.
  • The four images depict a person wearing gloves, a mask and a backpack appearing to tamper with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance.
  • FBI Director Kash Patel said the potential subject is armed.
  • The FBI said yesterday that it had not identified any suspects or persons of interest.
  • Guthrie, 84, was dropped off at her home outside Tucson, Arizona, the night of Jan. 31 and was reported missing about noon Feb. 1.
  • The FBI said yesterday that it is “not aware of any continued communication between the Guthrie family and suspected kidnappers.”

Seems like an experienced person would have had the duct tape strips ready to stick over the camera
Yes. They should have assumed there would be some sort of doorbell camera, like most people have. And come prepared to disable it first thing.

it's also possible it has an indicator light that turns on when it detects movement? i don't know much about nest cameras, and don't know if google will be much help if i don't know the model NG had.
Yes, the Google Nest Doorbell has a built-in LED indicator light to show device status (e.g., recording, live view) and a large light ring around the button that pulses or spins when detecting motion or being pressed.

Man, this view of the eyes sure does look more female than male. I know it’s hard to tell. But if I just saw this photo only, I would be convinced this is a female. The body looks male though on the full view.

Agree. Seemingly manicured eyebrows and I detect mascara or liner on the top lashes?
Big, distinctive eyes, unless they are wearing cosmetics lenses.

I truly get the creeps looking at this. So horrible.

Amateur opinion and speculation

Hoping they release estimates on height, shoe size …. As there are clear grids on the pavers and walls for good estimates.

To add — those mouth lights usually make the wearer drool a bit, talking not so easy, may need to be removed or handled by the gloves … am hoping that they have found some spittle or glove-transfer drool with DNA.

Thirdly … why try to block camera with leaves? This seems unprepared … a glove over it, smashing, a sticker?
This guy acts as if he has all day wandering around the entryway to the house. Yes holding up a bunch of leaves, etc. to block the camera! Preposterous.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it turns out this guy is mental.

That and this person grabbed an entire fistful of plants with their hands when they tried to use them to cover up the Nest cam - even wearing gloves there is likely DNA on those gloves from the person. Or even potential saliva on the plants.
Yeah the plants, which they didn't bother to secure for dna testing 🙄

though of course I’m well aware that reality is often not the same as what we want, but I really hope that AG and the SIL are not involved. My heart breaks for the family enough as is. I can’t imagine the added trauma that could result if this was done by someone you love and trust.
So true. Does SIL have plucked eyebrows? I hope not. The perp's eyebrows look way too groomed for a man but he's obviously a man.

Retired crime experts have already commented that it isn't.
Make you wonder WHY a person would have it front and center? Is perp wearing sweatpants OVER other trousers and only place the holster will position and keep trousers on or allow quick change?
Or is perp a lefty but wants to appear “either” by putting gun right handed but in the middle.
Position of gun in groin alters their gait? (Like - how to walk like a man .. hang a gun in your groin)

And with those big gloves could perp get to trigger?

It's possible the perp entered the house somewhere else, but wanted to remove NG via the front door (perhaps easier to get her in a car from that location). The perp appears to have scoped out the camera in the photo where he doesn't have his gun/backpack, then came back later to remove the camera (so that he could exit out the front door to a vehicle). If this is the case, the backpack could have been empty when he entered and full when he left. Was the front door unlocked?

Just reported that two SWAT trucks have left. Pima County! It may not be related to NG?

I know just enough about systems and servers to be annoying (but not enough to be in the know). These setups are huge, with layers like live databases, incremental backups, snapshot archives, and leftover logs. Whoever pulled these images probably had to dig through different storage tiers, reconcile metadata, and work through permission layers (basically combing through copies most people would never see). That takes serious effort and I think that’s pretty impressive.

I can’t help but wonder if the person in the video realizes these files were actually recoverable (are they realizing now that there are pics and video of them when everyone thought the camera saved nothing).
"I know just enough to be annoying" may now be my go-to phrase for my own randomly specific knowledge lol

You make an interesting point here about the person possibly knowing - or at least having some sort of idea that it would be POSSIBLE to grab images - I wonder if the person was familiar enough with NG/the home to know yes, there's a Nest cam (as they obviously seem aware on their approach) but there's nothing being "saved" because NG isn't paying for it. Removing it more as a "juuuust to be on the safe side" as opposed to knowing they're on it & someone could already be seeing it live.

They certainly don’t strike me as particularly intelligent or calculating… or able to respond well under pressure

I don't see anything wrong in asking what kind they were.

True, I mean some are broken and laying by the front door with a couple of pieces on top of Nancy's blood suggesting some fell after she was bleeding there.

Let’s hope they are seriously worried right this minute!

My husband has just waltzed in and asked the following questions:
1) Are there signs of forced entry?
2) If this person had a key, all those layers of gloves would impede digging it out of a pocket and using it.
3) Why would an elderly person (he arched his eyebrow at me for this one) open the door in the middle of the night when someone rings the doorbell?
4) If you have a doorbell camera, wouldn't you check it? And if you see such a getup on your doorstep, would you open?

His opinion is that the front door was a distraction and there were 3 people: a driver waiting outside of camera range, someone going around the back of the house, and the person on the porch.

Mind you, he is another old person who has spent the day doing his day job and has just emerged to ask these things before doing our disabled son's pre-dinner routine with him.

Please be patient with us. We mean well.
