It's not to avoid proper channels, but it does help make sure something important gets escalated and doesn't fall through cracks. When SG got word her mother was missing, she likely put on her journalist and media hats and dialed up the highest person in Arizona that she could think of in her rolodex. Back channels exist everywhere. Not sketchy, not shady, and in a scary, personal situation, calling anyone she could think of to help make phone calls on her behalf.Something I can't get out of my head:
