Here’s what we know about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, as home becomes crime scene

Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, has now been missing for three nights, with authorities believing she has been abducted or kidnapped.

Former FBI special agent Nicole Parker ..... that Nancy Guthrie had likely been taken by someone with a “deep grievance”.

“I do believe that it was someone who likely knows her, knows her very well, or knows the structure of the home very well, knows that she lived alone, had their eye on her, and had the entry and exit points of the home, and is quite familiar,” Parker said.

Would agree this seems personal and not random.
Not impossible (for this to be random, it's happened before) -- but no ransom request and kidnapping a vulnerable elderly woman in the middle of the night sounds exactly like someone who knew their way around her house ?

Sad and infuriating, as all of us should be able to feel safe inside our own locked homes !!

per this article I think it's entirely possible the family members discovered the Ring camera was missing and/or the blood droplets on the walkway.

A family member called 911 around noon Sunday to report her missing, Nanos said, and homicide detectives were sent to the home.

“Something that they told me about that scene made me believe that there’s more than just a missing person,” Nanos said about the decision to set in motion a criminal investigation. “We still hope she’s alive, and we continue with those missions of search and rescue.”

It is pretty simple for a professional to determine when an elderly person can no longer be self sufficient at home.

Just last week I met with a woman in the hospital who was adamant about going home. After a 30 minute discussion she opted to go to a rehab facility so she could regain enough strength to go home.

I call the State on several people a year who need to be removed from their home. This is usually because of cognitive decline, however I've called the State for elder abuse and unsanitary living conditions.

I always try and get the family involved but it is not always easy to do that.

We are a big fan of nanny cams and First Alert fobs for the elderly at home.

I want people to stay at home until they're no longer able to. Whether it's physical or mental, it makes no difference.

It seems Nancy was ok at home and had the appropriate level of help. I am interested to see how this mystery develops.

It's encouraging to hear that there are advocates for the elderly like you and not being intimated of taking action when needed.

It was the sheriff who said that NG would never make it out the door and that loaded claim leaves images of an elderly woman who lives alone and is physically incapacitated to help herself in an emergency.

After hearing some of his interviews from his media tour I see him as unprofessional, talks too much and much of what he does say is convoluted.

I don't mean this insensitively at all, but burglary/robbery/sexual assault/murder towards an 84 year old lady with mobility issues would likely have been efficiently accomplished without going through the trouble of physically removing her from the home. Even if she knew the perp it still seems like a risk too great and/or an unnecessary step too much. Especially since they are insinuating that she left alive (small drips like from a nose bleed). That latter fact leads more towards a calculated event, such as kidnapping for ransom, "vicarious" kidnapping/murder for stalker/threat/revenge, or kidnapping/murder for inheritance, etc than it does an impulsive, "scrambling perp" event.

It really doesn't matter if the ring camera was removed- anything it captured is in the cloud, not on that device

That would depend on if she was paying for the Ring service.
I have been able to use my Ring cameras and not have the service and therefore it did not save any of my videos.

It's shameful to SA an elderly woman (yes, I know it's shameful for any age victim). But even among pervs and criminals, you don't SA elderly women.

Shame + evidence could be a motivator to a perp to take the victim's body.

However, we don't know she was taken alive or not! We don't know the nature of her leaving the home against her will.

But if she were SA, I think shame would be a reason to remove her.

I am not. I would think they would search the whole house then the property outdoors in case she had fallen and couldn't get up, in the fear she was still there (wallet, phone, everything else was seemingly still there) and perhaps unconscious or otherwise unable to call out to them.

MOO when I go to my elderly relative's home and don't find them where I expect to but nothing seems obviously amiss, I look around for them, then on not finding them, call police. I don't immediately leap to well this is odd, must be a crime scene.

The blood drops allegedly found were to my understanding located outside of the home along a walkway form home to drive. Droplets, not buckets. JMO

That makes sense. Hindsight is always 20-20, isn't it? The police - who know what they are looking at/for were very quick to call this a crime scene and call in homicide. Her family probably saw nothing alarming, other than the fact that she was not in the house, or on the grounds.

Where is the dog now?

If it is there and fine, I would think that the perp was known to them. If if was killed or injured, I would think it was a stranger. Why is there no mention of the dog???

I wonder about the dog too. Is the dog in the photo Nancy's,... and still living with her? If so, where is it? My dogs sometimes get me up in the middle of the night and I take them outside in the fenced yard to potty. Sometimes I stand out there until they come back in. Sometimes, they get distracted by and chase visiting deer and other animals and I have to work at getting them to come back in - calling, commanding, cajoling, bribing, and sometimes just going out where they are with a leash and dragging them away from what they are so interested in at 3 in the morning when sensible animals and humans sleep.

Could Nancy's dog have awakened her and she let it outside? Were any other animals out there that her dog might have chased? Or that might have chased her dog? Coyotes tend to work in packs, surrounding other animals and causing them to go further out until they can be taken down by the group.

Authorities say Nancy's mobility was limited, but would she have risked going outside and then further out in an attempt to collect and possibly protect her dog?

ETA: I know the Sheriff says they found some kind of indicators that she was taken against her will and may have been harmed in doing so - and the indicators were apparently strong enough that they immediately brought homicide detectives in, but we don't know what those indicators are and it appears that family who conducted the immediate search may have missed the significance of those indicators. Is it possible those indicators are not certain evidence that a crime occurred?

I have an elderly friend who lives alone. I talked her into having a Ring doorbell installed but she refuses to pay the $50 annual charge for the service that alllows video to be stored and reviewed.

She only likes having the ability to see who is at her door.

I have a question about this. Are pacemakers traceable, do we know one way or another? If hers had the ability to sync with her smart watch then it must be more advanced, so I am hopeful that it can be.

My mom has a pacemaker. Hers syncs with her phone once every night at a time that was programmed. Then it sends details to her doctor. No tracking device. But she does have to be 6 ft or less from her phone. The other option was to sync to a device installed by her bed but same 6 ft rule.

Therefore, I’m guessing the 2am time was the daily sync and not necessarily indicating that she was snatch or left (or worse) after that.

Yep....where is the dog? If the front door or slider was left open, wouldn't the dog be out running in the yard? Would his barking be an alert to an approaching stranger? Did the dog ever get out before and end up at the neighbors? Did NG have recent (heavy) deliveries requiring someone to enter the residence? Did she recently have a yard sale or put something up on FB marketplace for sale? Gheeesh....am really digging deep here....WTF...(yeah a little raging, too) Who would take an 84 year old female from their home?!!! To what end? What was the plan? Or, or, or...was she robbed "earlier" (like jewelry, diamonds, gold coins/ingots) and this is a "distraction" to cover up the earlier crime? By that I mean...so often an arson fire is set to cover up an earlier crime, like robbery or murder. The victim did not die because of the fire, but the fire used to cover the murder..... think Sante Kimes(grifter who preyed on the elderly and the disappearance of Irene Silverman????

How long did the drive take for family to reach her home. If you get a call at 11am, that doesn't mean you're at the house by 11:01am. It takes time, plus time to look around the house and yard and to process that you need help.

The timing of the call for help is not troubling, imo.

Possibly, but a perp who would sexually assault an 84 year old lady isn't likely to have shame wired into his DNA.

It's true that we don't know she was alive when she left the home, but there is an insinuation that she was alive due to the "small drips, like from a nose bleed" comment from the Sheriff. That isn't definitive, of course, but it was stated on purpose like every other public comment from a law enforcement agency is.

LE said yesterday they called off the searching, and I'm assuming they made the decision for a reason (that we don't know).
