On December 14, 2001, the body of Natalie Moton was discovered in her apartment at 1145 Oak Park Court in South Bend, IN. Natalie was a single mother with two children. She had a five-year-old son with autism and a two-year-old daughter. The night of Natalie’s murder her son was spending the night with his paternal grandmother while her two-year-old daughter was home with her. Now at some point in the night a knock came at the back door. Natalie had two locks on this back door and three locks on her front door. Security was clearly important to Natalie and yet she unlocked the door for the person who knocked. The person unfortunately came with a firearm and instantly became a threat. Natalie ran for the front door but before she could get the locks undone and the door unlocked, she was shot and killed.
Natalie’s body was discovered the next morning by her son’s paternal grandmother who was dropping off her grandson. When police arrived at the scene they found Natalie dead from multiple gun shot wounds and Tia in her bedroom upstairs in her crib. In fact, responding officers thought that Tia was dead as well until they turned the light on in her room and she woke up. Sadly, the police could tell where her eyes were stained by tears from the night before as Tia most likely was awoken by the sound of her mother being shot and then cried herself to sleep.
Despite the horrific nature of this crime, no one has ever been arrested for the murder of Natalie Moton. Her children are now grown up and have lived more of their lives without their mother than with. The police have never really named a suspect and no new update on this case has been featured either in the South Bend Tribune or any of the local news stations since 2002. It seems that Natalie’s murder has largely been forgotten until now.
