National List Of Problem Teachers Is Now Public

If you worked on LI you would be making very close to $100,000 a year at 20 years, with full medical and a pension that pays 90% of your salary when you retire. Not a bad gig.

... if you're lucky, yeah. But up here, it means nothing. They start you at 60K with your masters. You're considered poor.
We still need 2 incomes to live on Long Island, though. AND my husband has 2 jobs. Most of you would faint at the sight of our taxes alone.

Just want to say that hubby and I are both teachers. He's never been insubordinate or written up. I have, but that's my own personal Building Business issue. I think this website is ridiculous and bears no meaning whatsoever on the type of teacher your child may have. Unless they are a danger to the child, a person's PERSONAL financial and medical records should NOT be made public at all.
I know great teachers with poor credit and bad teachers with good credit. I know teachers who smoke pot and hit their kids, and I know teachers who don't drink and attend church on Sundays. We're there to teach kids.

I understand the troubles of finding good teachers. Hubby is a special ed teacher - handling the kids that the public schools can't deal with - dual diagnosis - and he does it at a facility which is year round and still pays less than public schools... and don't even get me started on the insurance.

However, you (and he) paid college tuition with federal money, which taxpayers subsidized for you. If you went to a public school, your state taxpayers subsidized most of your tuition. Any college you attended likely took research dollars - again a taxpayer subsidy. Society invested in you and you are giving back.

Likewise, society has entrusted you by allowing you to practice an honored profession with an extraordinary amount of influence over young people. To ensure you are worthy of that trust, you've made a promise to hold yourself to a higher standard.

BTW - If I speed continuously with my driver's license, it can be revoked.
You must be much younger than I am. I paid for my own college and my own graduate degree. NO HELP FROM THE GOVERNMENT OR TAXPAYERS. I loved my career and my children over the years. It was a good job...however, the tide was changing when I retired. By the way, I was medically retired after an emotionally disturbed child broke my back. Today, a teacher needs battle pay. And no, I didn't sue.

I AGREE with you! Great post. I loved my children. ALL OF THEM! Teachers don't make enough to stay there if they don't love their job. Unfortunately, a few naughty teachers are getting media attention for their bad deeds, and much like the case with priests, the witch hunt begins.
