Native American group slams Kardashian mom comment

  • #41
I hadn't even heard the "jewed me down" phrase until I was in high school and I once wondered aloud " How is it spelled? Is it j-e-w-d as in lewd, or j-e-u-d like feud?" My boyfriend looked at me like I was crazy and explained what it meant and how it was spelled. I was horrified and made a mental note to keep it out of my vocabulary.

So, I totally agree, oftentimes people use offensive words or phrases without realizing the origins.

ITA re origins. I grew up hearing the phrase Indian-giver here in Oz, and I had no idea of how offensive it was.

So since I haven't seen it mentioned in this thread, I did a quick google search , and a good alternative to use is degifter.

In case I wasn't clear before, I believe every group (and every individual) should be allowed to choose their own nomenclature. The Native Americans I know agree with you, so those are the terms I use.

I've changed the terms I use to refer to African Americans several times in my 57 years, and why not? This is not a hardship.

You're not the only one Nova. I totally get where you're coming from. And I too am glad I read this thread. :thumb:

IMO, to a large degree, it's a bit of age thing - whether or not you're aware that some phrases/sayings/labels have fallen into the category of political incorrectness.

I too have NEVER ever in my long, long life recall ever associating Native Americans with the phrase "Indian Giver". Yet, now that it's come to my attention - how strange is it that I never associated the two? :banghead:

In a similarly embarrassing fashion, my <very patient> children are trying to break me of the habit of using another sort of formerly ethnic "label" - which has fallen out of favor. They beat me over the head when I slip-up and use the currently uncool ethnic term. Their dogged-determination is working. I'm catching on. And, I'm not trying to be stubborn at all - I'm just breaking a habit! Thank goodness they understand and forgive my slowness. :innocent: I recall noticing the same slowness about my folks when they could not get jiggy with the new lingo. I'd correct them, and eventually they caught on.

Ma Jenner, obnoxious reality mom extraordinarre, is guilty of many things. Being "up there" in age, and needing to be careful to avoid using politically incorrect dated expressions is but one of them. :giggle:

Of course, one might advise Ma Jenner that she could avoid this problem by refraining from attempting to insult others on TV. ;) Although, something tells me that she might be even more mortified over this faux-pax than she is over her daughter's quickie end to wedded fairytale bliss.

LOL.
