'The search warrants executed this week by the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, and the SBI are related to the disappearance of Asha Degree. The search warrants were obtained based on physical evidence directly connected to Asha's disappearance. Multiple items of interest were taken from the sites and will be analyzed. It is important to dispel rumors circulating about the investigation. No human remains were recovered. Again, no human remains were found. This investigation is ongoing and official information will be released by the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office when appropriate. Please do not spread rumors on social media out of respect for Asha's family and this investigation.

Asha Degree was last seen reportedly walking down Highway 18 between Fallston and Shelby on Feb. 14, 2000.

Does this mean that hypothetically, the police could have found DNA on the buried items, then identified a suspect in an unknown way, confirmed the DNA somehow, then got a search warrant based on a DNA match?

They would only be able to search with probable cause like a DNA match, correct?

IMO, that would make sense. DNA or fingerprint...hair or fiber..

It’s quite possible they did find trace evidence on the backpack or its contents when it was recovered in 2001. It was wrapped in garbage bags and was found a year later as opposed to longer. They probably kept the sample of whatever they found stored away until the technology behind DNA advanced. This has happened in various cases that were solved using DNA over the last few years.

In the Gilgo Beach murder case which is local to me, they found the killer because he left his and his wife’s DNA on the victims remains and hairs on the body that would link him to the murder victims. Could totally see them retesting old evidence in the Degree case and actually finding a viable lead

No, I don't think there is anything new about that girl. With all the crazy rumors flying around since the news of the search there was claims she had been identified, but seems like this was just false info.

I've always thought that placing items in the bag that didn't belong to Asha was a huge mistake by the perp. They obviously thought these things belonged to her but they were wrong, that could very well be it. We also have to remember there could have been other things in the bag that we weren't made aware of.

Probably. In stark contrast to lots of other missing person cases where they vanish with little to nothing to work with, whoever was involved here handled the bag and its contents in some capacity before of course dumping it. So good chance they left behind DNA or something.

I believe it. Someone connected to him, like a family member. It’s quite possible the POI used one of his properties for the crime

SHELBY, N.C. — Authorities spent more than 24 hours searching two properties in Cleveland County, and Channel 9 learned it was in connection with the disappearance of 9-year-old Asha Degree.

On Friday, the attorney for the man who owns those properties says court documents “will link a person to the circumstances of Asha’s disappearance that is no longer living.”

I am thinking. If the deceased person linked to Asha's disappearance is '' tenuously" connected to Roy / the Dedmons, why were only Roy's properties searched, not the deceased's residence, etc?

Speculative. My opinion only answers: 1. They are looking for the car, it ended up in posession or use of both the deceased and Roy. Did they only search the yards? This would makr sense. 2. The person has been deceased for a while, thereford they do not have a residence of the deceased to search at. 3. Police have enough info to base searches on the crime scene being on a Dedmon residence. 4. The deceased lived at a Dedmon residence.
