[h=1]Several Hospitalized After Attempted Prison Break in North Carolina[/h]

At least six people were injured during an attempted prison break in North Carolina on Thursday, officials said.

Fires were set in the sewing plant at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City, the state Department of Public Safety said Thursday afternoon. The high-security prison has a capacity of 896 inmates and was housing 729 on Thursday, authorities said.

A judge ruled in favor of a motion to move the trial of Mikel Edward Brady from Pasquotank to Dare County.

Brady was one of four inmates charged after the failed escape attempt at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in 2017.

Four employees at the prison were killed in the incident -- Geoffrey Howe, Veronica Darden, Wendy Shannon and correctional officer Justin Smith.

Brady's trial is scheduled for Oct 7.

Mikel Brady’s capital murder trial is scheduled for Oct. 7, nearly two years after the Oct. 12 incident in which four prison employees were killed at PCI during a failed escape attempt.

Killed in the escape attempt were correction enterprises manager Veronica “Ronnie” Darden, 50; corrections officers Justin Smith, 35, and Wendy Shannon, 49; and maintenance mechanic Geoffrey Howe, 31.

In addition to Brady, three other inmates are charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the prison workers’ deaths. They include Wisezah Buckman, Seth Frazier and Jonathan Monk. The District Attorney’s Office is seeking the death penalty against all four inmates.
