Maybe we need a thread of Missing in Robeson County/ Lumberton. I think we'd be shocked how many there would be.

Welcome to Websleuths, Pam. I'm so sorry you are going through this horrible time-- I cannot imagine not knowing where my husband was or what happened to him and feeling like LE was not doing anything to find him. Lumberton sure seems like a mess. I hope things will get better there. I hope Billy is found soon.

Man’s disappearance a mystery | Robesonian
Pamela Hammonds wants to know what happened to her husband.

Her father-in-law, however, has his own theory: Billy Gene Hammonds was murdered, a consequence of a drug-fed life.

A search for Billy Gene was conducted on Dec. 13, 2016, on Snake Road in Lumberton, Pamela said. A bloody shoe was found, but could not be linked to Billy Gene.

“Multiple searches in different areas have been conducted for this missing person by the sheriff’s department,” said sheriff’s Maj. Anthony Thompson.

Thompson would not comment further because the case is active.

The mystery grows because of Billy Gene’s connection to the case of Rebecca Muse Hunt, who on Nov. 22, 2016, was shot by Lumberton police Officer Daniel Maurice Smith in the parking lot of the Dollar General store on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Lumberton.

According witnesses, Muse tried to drive away as Smith was handcuffing Billy Gene. Smith moved Hammonds out of the way as the truck, driven by Muse, started backing out of the parking lot. Muse was ordered multiple times to stop but did not. Smith was struck by the door, and he fired two shots, both of which struck Muse. Muse survived but with severe injuries.

Smith was cleared of all wrongdoing by Robeson County District Attorney Johnson Britt. Britt said in the report that attempts to interview Billy Gene were unsuccessful because he could not be found.

Lumberton, North Carolina, Where 3 Women Mysteriously Died Last Year, Has Sordid History of Violence
Between 2002 and 2005, Brian Lowery, 31; Stephanie Lewis, 21; and Jessica Lowery, 25, disappeared. Billy Gene Hammonds, 36, hasn't been seen since Nov. 26, 2016.

“He said, ‘I’m going up to ma’s, I’ll be back in 30 minutes,’” his wife, Pamela Hammonds, told InsideEdition.com, before breaking down in tears. "I’ve just waited for so long for someone to listen to me, and it’s just so emotional."

Hammonds was officially reported missing 13 days after he was last seen, and his wife, who now lives in Florida, has made countless trips back to Lumberton, where her husband grew up, hoping to get answers.

“There have been no leads,” Pamela Hammonds said. “Billy, he had his problems with drugs. I just want him acknowledged.”

She’s passed out flyers and created a Facebook group and held vigils in hopes that someone will come forward with information about her husband. A search for Hammonds conducted on Dec. 13, 2016 uncovered a bloody shoe, but it could not be linked to the missing man.

“Billy burned a lot of bridges and he hurt people,” Pamela Hammonds acknowledged. “But you know, he has a mother, he’s got a wife, our family. We need to know [what happened]."

She’s convinced that her husband is dead at this point, but she wants to be able to lay him to rest.

“I just want justice,” she said.

Wouldn't his wife know "what" kind of shoes he was wearing or had? Wonder if they did DNA test on the "bloody" shoe?

Thanks for all the articles PommyMommy!

You're welcome, and Merry Christmas, Niner.

I would think PH was familiar with his shoes. I don't know about DNA testing, but maybe the shoe wasn't his size?

I would like to know if he was walking to his mom's and where he started from.

Also, Pinwheel Circle (mom's house) is 7 miles from Snake Road. Why were they searching on Snake Road? Google Maps

Adding the location where the remains were found (Barker Ten Mile and Powersville Roads) to map in post #12:
Google Maps

There are railroad tracks he would have had to cross between pinwheel circle and snake rd:
Google Maps

If he was walking to his mom's house on Pinwheel I wonder if he took a shortcut here off east 5th street and walked on the tracks: Google Maps

:(

Body buried in North Carolina yard identified as man who vanished in 2016, cops say

A body found buried behind a North Carolina home was identified as a man who vanished in 2016, officials said.

Billy Gene Hammonds was 36 years old when he was reported missing in Lumberton, roughly 95 miles south of Raleigh.

More than five years later, an interview led deputies to his remains in a backyard, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said May 3 in a news release.
