Laurens County deputies said they were assisting Gaston County police in the search for remains of a woman missing from North Carolina for more than 20 years.

Captain Robert Wilkie with the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office said officers were using cadaver dogs and a ground penetrating radar to search a particular area on Serene Drive in Waterloo.

Gaston County Police investigators followed a tip to Waterloo, South Carolina, in a 1995 missing person’s case on Friday, but came up empty in the search for Debra Herms Childers.

Childers, who would be 63 now, was 40-years-old when she was last seen in the Creekside Mobile Home Park outside Bessemer City on March 22, 1995. She was living there with her former in-laws at the time, and was reportedly heading to Clover, South Carolina, for a date.

Gaston Police said they received a tip that Herms-Childers may be buried on the property, specifically under a concrete pad in the backyard.

Hamlin told us this is the first time the property has been searched.

The search was wrapped up for the day around 3 p.m. and all evidence will be taken back to a lab for further analysis.

The cadaver dogs are being provided by The South Carolina Search & Rescue Dog Association (http://www.scsarda.org/).

Assistance with the ground penetrating radar is being provided by The University of South Carolina Institute of Archaeology & Anthropology, according to the sheriff.

Search crews in South Carolina used dogs specially trained to find bodies and ground penetrating radar to try to find a North Carolina woman missing for 23 years.

Laurens County Sheriff Don Reynolds says his deputies were called by Gaston County police from North Carolina and asked to search property near Waterloo.

Gaston County police say they are searching for Debra Herms-Childers, who was 40 years old when she disappeared in March 1995.

Authorities told media outlets her car was found on a Chester County logging road and her roommate called police because she did not pick up her paycheck.

Reynolds says his deputies wrapped up their search Friday and is sending evidence along to be analyzed.

The UID in Startex was estimated to be 5'5" and Debra was tiny at 5'0". The age range does fit, though. And Startex is right off I-85, so the UID could be from anywhere. I had honestly forgotten about this one, which is fairly local to me.

Details of Disappearance​

Childers was last seen in Bessemer City, North Carolina on March 22, 1995, when she left home for a date in Clover. She was driving a dark blue 1985 Chevrolet Caprice at the time. She has never been heard from again. On April 9, the car was found abandoned in a wooded area off State Route 97 in Chester County, South Carolina. The vehicle's license plate was missing, but there were no indications of foul play.

At the time of her disappearance, Childers was working at Threads USA and living with her former in-laws in the Creekside Mobile Home Park. It was they who reported her missing on March 29; they didn't do it sooner because she had a history of dropping out of sight for a few days at a time.

Childers left behind two paychecks when she vanished. She was going through a divorce and her ex-husband is considered a person of interest in her case, but he died without ever being charged in her disappearance. Her case remains unsolved.
