DURHAM, N.C. -- Police are treating the discovery of a body underneath a Durham bridge on Tuesday as a suspicious death.


State workers found the remains, which were badly decomposed, at about 2 p.m. under the the Vickers Avenue bridge near Chapel Hill Road.


Police were not able to identify the body or determine a cause of death. They were unsure how long it had been under the bridge.

The victim was Gumercindo Mendizabal. He was last seen alive on April 17.
