GUILTY NC - Eight dead in Carthage nursing home shooting, 29 March 2009

What I got from the reporter's questions and the non answers from the authorities, it seems he was related in some way to a staff member, sorry if that isn't clear.

This is just sickening.

Thank you SuziQ for providing information. :blowkiss:

It appears you are correct.

(snip)
Stewart was not a patient at the center, and police have not given a motive for the attack, but family members tell Eyewitness News that Stewart's estranged wife worked at the nursing home and he apparently went there looking for her. The pair have been separated for about three weeks. The woman was able to get away and was not injured in the attack.

7 residents, 1 nurse die in N.C. nursing home shooting

CARTHAGE, N.C. A gunman opening fire at a Moore County nursing home earlier today killed eight people, including seven elderly residents, and wounded three others, police said at an afternoon press conference.

The shootings, during which a suspect was also wounded, took place at about 10 a.m. at the Pinelake Health and Rehab facility at 801 Pinehurst Ave. in Carthage, about 60 miles southwest of Raleigh.

Of the dead, seven were residents and one was an employee, police said.

District Attorney General Maureen Krueger identified the dead as: Tessie Garner, 88 Lillian Dunn, 89 Jessie Musser, 88 John Goldston, 78 Margaret Johnson, 89 Louise Decker, 98 Bessie Hendrick, 78 Jerry Avent, age not given.

Avent was an employee of the home. A visitor, Michael Cotton, 53, was shot but survived.

Police identified the suspect as Robert Stewart, 45, of Moore County, and said that he has been taken into custody.

"This is a tragedy beyond comprehension for Moore County," said State Sen. Harris Blake, who represents the area.

Blake said there was a lot of concern about security at the Moore County hospital when the injured, alleged assailant was taken there so Stewart was being transported to a hospital in Wake County.

"I was told he would be moved to Wake County," Blake said. "He is going to have to have some surgery. Apparently, he got hit with some bullets."

A Carthage police officer, Justin Garner, 25, was shot in the leg during the incident, but he was treated and released. Law enforcement officials declined to give details of the shootings. Earlier today, hospital and emergency officials said victims were taken to Moore Regional Hospital in Carthage.

Found something interesting

http://www.oldsite.336ahc.com/honor_roll/honor_roll_main.htm#

Seems there was a guy that died in Vietnam in 1967 by the same name from Carthage. Wonder if this could have been his father. it's all so sick and it would just make it sicker that his father died serving his country and this 🤬🤬🤬 killed innocent people.

How senseless!! Prayers for the victims families and friends.

I just saw the ages of all of the elderly victims, one was 98 years old!! To live to the age of 98, just to be taken out of this world in such a violent way!

I also shudder to think that most of these patients were in wheelchairs or bed ridden and had no chance at getting away. Unbelievable!

Prayers for the family members.

Holy Carp.. this is where I have family and thinking of moving.. nothing happens in carthage except crimes relating to the Ft Bragg...jeepers didnt hear anythhign til just now been busy painting ceilings all day ( oh joy). I am surprised that I havent heard from the family on this one as it is so close to home for them and they are all in the nursing/healthcare business..

I feel so terribly for these seniors who couldnt protect themselves from this 🤬🤬🤬.. thank goodness that one young officer was so brave when he answered the call. I cant commend him enough on his bravery and that thanks to him he prevented a much worse tragedy.. thought this is of little comfort to the families of these loved ones who lost their lives to such horrible acts of agression today. My heart and prayers goes out to the families who lost so much today.

MOORE COUNTY -- Chilling 911 calls were released Monday of people calling for help as a gunman allegedly killed eight people at a nursing home in Carthage Sunday morning.
One woman told the operator "somebody's up here shooting at the nursing home." Seconds later, a police officer asks for every available law enforcement officer in the area to respond. (mpre at link)

What a sick 🤬🤬🤬! I wish there was a way we could weed out these monsters and have them euthanized at birth so they can't live to commit horrendous acts.:furious:
Those poor seniors didn't stand a chance:(

one of the responding officers lives next door to my sister who had a very difficult time explaining why he was on the news to my nephew..

we have all talked to our kids and educators about protecting themselves and the students should a shooter targer their school.. we have never considered anyone attacking our elders who are already in poor health or mental health and totally unable to protect themselves nor even make an attempt to escape this type of horrific crime..

just so awful and just so wrong..

Here is the audio of the 911 calls.....

Scars deep as NC nursing home shooting trial nears

Stewart's attorney, Jonathan Megerian, asked to move the trial to another county because of publicity. Moore County Superior Court Judge James Webb didn't grant that request, but he took the unusual step of picking a jury from Stanly County. That county seat, Albemarle, is about 60 miles west of Carthage. The jurors will be bused back and forth every day between the two cities during a trial that Megerian said could last two months.

Court Cancelled in Pinelake Murder Trial

Court was cancelled Monday and Tuesday in the Pinelake murder case. Evidence for the defense in Robert Kenneth Stewart’s capital murder trial was delayed by at least two days when one juror became ill. Senior Resident Superior Court Judge James M. Webb did not immediately replace that juror, an indication the court hopes it won’t be necessary.

IMO, this is BS. How many of the elderly patients were unable to escape this madman? Carp, they had to have been terrified! I'm sick of do gooders, devils advocates, and spineless juries.

(snip)
The jury deliberated for two days before reaching the verdict against Robert Stewart, a 47-year-old disabled painter and National Guard veteran.
The decision is at least a partial victory for Stewart's defense team, which had argued that mental illness and a cocktail of prescription drugs rendered him incapable of fully understanding his actions, and therefore ineligible for a first-degree murder conviction. While never denying that Stewart carried out the deadly shooting, his lawyers hoped to keep him off death row.
