GUILTY NC - Emily Haddock, 12, shot to death in her Vass home, 21 Sept 2007

If anyone gets flamed about the topic of medications et al, I hope it happens on another thread. This particular thread is about the murder of Emily Haddock. I'm aware of a few other threads at WS where the medication issue could be taken.

Just my opinion.

OMG!:(:(:(:( What a heartbreaking story!

You know, that was always a huge fear of mine when my girls were small and I worked. Luckily my parents lived 10 minutes away and would drive over and keep the one who was sick if I couldn't miss work. I NEVER let them stay home alone. Not until they were 17 yrs old and both were jrs in high school. I worked 5 minutes from home and made sure my work number was on speed dial, the doors were locked and luckily one of my best friends lives next door.

I know many working parents don't have the luxury of staying home, or having a relative nearby to check on the kids. I don't know what these parents circumstances were but in this day and time, children cannot be left alone.

I agree. Until recently I worked as a teaching assistant at the primary school my son and daughter attended. One day a message came down to me from the deputy head informing me that my daughter was feeling ill and would need to go home.

I went to see the deputy to see if it was ok if I went home as there were no family members available on that day to look after my daughter and she said to me 'Well cant she stay on her own?' She was 9 years old! I was horrified!

When I was recently widowed, my 9 year old daughter was very sick one morning. I called my employer to say I was taking my daughter to the doctors. My employer responded that if I didn't come in, I would be fired. So I left my sick 9 year old at home...alone. There was no one available to watch her. And daycare's will not take sick children. I called my daughter about every half hour. Which should have been no big deal since my job was to be on the phone anyways. I was at work two hours when my boss complained about me calling my daughter. I immediately packed up my stuff and left that job for good. Losing that job eventually caused me to have to sell my house.

I remember that "sick child" issue when I worked full-time (and was the sole supporter). It was awful. Back then I dreamed of opening a daycare for sick kids just so parents wouldn't have this problem. It would be like a mini-hospital so that there wouldn't be cross-contamination, etc. and it would be open 24 hours. Hey, I can dream, can't I? :(

It's just really sad when parents have to make these decisions because of a boss that doesn't get it. Especially when it means something like this happens.

I wonder if the mother would have been killed though too, if she had been at home?

She probably would have.

When my son was 10, he woke up with a 105 temperature. My boss wanted me to leave him home alone and I wouldn't. I was horrified that he thought that would be alright. Lost my job over that but my children come first.

What a horrible person he must be to slaughter some innocent child just to rip off a tv or stereo for a few bucks! I hope they catch this 🤬🤬🤬 soon! The poor family must be devastated and I can't imagine how the grandfather feels after finding his sweet grandaughter that way. My heart truly goes out to him and their family.

I have a small company and if an employee's child is ill (providing it is something minor such as a slight fever or a cold)...I always allow them to bring the child to work where we have a break room set up with a television, games, coloring books, sofa, and fridge. If they are too ill to do this...I want the parent to stay home and take care of them instead of leaving them alone. It is a perk my employees really appreciate as parents. They know I am an advocate for children and want what is best for their families. Isn't this the reason we work?!

I think leaving a child of any age at home alone is too risky nowadays. Latchkey kids, imo, should also be a thing of the past. There are wonderful afterschool programs at the YMCA and other places for all ages.

I wish there were more bosses like you, SS. :blowkiss:

There should be! There is no company that should demand you leave a sick child unattended. Children DO come first and it is up to us to insure we are on board with the families we employee.

OMG I feel terribly for this little girl and for her family. I know this area well and have family living there. It worries me that the crime here is getting higher. The perp in this case deserves no mercy..nor should he draw another breath. Anone who could harm this child in such a violent way deserves a slow and painful death. Immediatley with no trial no appeals no 10 years on death row. I feel terribly for this family who will now have to live with the decision to leave her home alone for ever.. its a nightmare that will never end. I am so sorry for this little girl her home which was to be safe was violated. She must have been terrified .. she should never have had to deal with such violence on her own.. I hope she finds peace and that the angels find a lovely place in heaven for her. I can only hope that they catch this perp.. I hope her family can find some peace and solace that she is safely in the care of angels now.. and on a more personal note I worry about my family living there as long as he is loose. Some other areas in Vass and nearby towns are remote with no close neighbors.

SS, what you do is absolutely wonderful!

Thanks, SuziQ! I was a single parent for many years and know the difficulties facing other parents. There is no reason ANY company or business cannot make exceptions to the rules to enable families to be there for their children while working! It is a win/win situation. The parents are more productive in the long run and the children are taken care of appropriately. Common sense.

Vass — Two teens were arrested and charges were pending against a third Monday evening in connection with the slaying of a 12-year-old girl in her Moore County home last week.
Authorities arrested Van Roger Smith Jr., 16, and Sherrod Nicholas Harrison, 19. Both are charged with murder and breaking and entering.

After a search, the Moore County Sheriff's Office took Michael Graham Currie, 18, into custody Monday night. Charges against Currie are pending.

They look so young and babyfaced. They don't look like the hardened teenagers I'm used to seeing in mugshots.

:furious:

Could not find a thread for this. My friend just sent me this article.

Carthage — Tight security surrounded three teens Tuesday who have been charged with killing a 12-year-old girl in her Moore County home last week.

Sherrod Nicholas Harrison, 19, Michael Graham Currie, 18, and Van Roger Smith Jr., 16, all of Cameron, have been charged with first-degree murder and breaking and entering in the death of Emily Elizabeth Haddock.

The three teens made their first court appearance Tuesday morning and were appointed attorneys. A bond hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in District Court, but authorities have declined to disclose the time of the hearing for security reasons.

Rumors of threats against the teens swirled through the Moore County Courthouse Tuesday, although authorities said they have received no specific threat.

The teens were being held without bond Tuesday in the Moore County Detention Center, pending Wednesday's hearing.

Meanwhile, about 500 people packed the Hope Mills First Baptist Church for Emily's funeral Tuesday afternoon.

"Everybody's crying. It's sad," said Rick Parker, a friend of the Haddock family. "The preacher can hardly preach. It's hard for words."

Flame me if you want but it really PI$$E$ me off that any white on black crime is quickly labeled a "hate crime" but not black on white crime. WTH!!!

4th Suspect Arrested in Vass Girl's Death

Carthage — A fourth suspect was charged in the death of a 12-year-old Moore County girl who was found dead in her home last Friday.

Perry Ross Schiro, 19, of 174 Independence Way in Cameron, was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of breaking and entering in connection with the death of Emily Elizabeth Haddock.

Authorities said Haddock was at home sick Friday when someone broke into her Marks Road home outside Vass and shot her several times with a .22-caliber handgun. Investigators said the intruders intended to burglarize the house, but were surprised to find Haddock at home.

Moore County Sheriff Lane Carter said in a news release that Shiro was arrested in Harnett County earlier this week on charges of several violations related to a gun found in his vehicle.

That poor child!! Can you imagine the fear she felt with 4 men breaking into the house?? I would have been terrified, I might have jumped out of the window to get away from them.

We live in an area were we dont lock the doors on the house during the day, basically the last person in for the night locks them. Stories like this remind me that I dont need to move, I'll just stay here.

I might get flamed for saying this but I am a big girl and I can handle it...I think what is causing so many people to have psychopathic tendancies is so many parents sticking their children on mind-altering drugs (add,adhd,bi-polar etc etc) that now they are adults, young adults and their brains are fried, they have been on mind altering medication so long they don't know how to be productive members of society... I am a BIG HUUUUUGE advocate on NO DRUGS for children I am side by side with Kelly Preston on this issue.

I agree with you completely on this. In almost all if not all of the school shootings, the shooters were on some type of prescribed "mental health" medication; mostly SSRI's.
