Eugene Raymond Berry was 26 years old when he went missing in August 1991. “He was last seen by his sister at 216 Virginia Avenue which was the old Dove Meadows before they were torn down,” police said. Berry told his sister he was having trouble breathing. “He left to go walk up to the store to get some medicine for his asthma and he was never seen again.”

Berry was supposed to be at work on August 22 and 23, but never showed up. “Which was very uncharacteristic of him.” In 1995, one tip came in. “They said that he was living in Garden Lake Estates and they also told the officer that his body was seen in Greenfield Lake around that time,” police said. Oolice could not find a body. There are no pictures of berry. Police just have a description. “5’1 155 lbs, brown hair brown eyes, wore green contacts.”

Interesting... he was said to have been seen alive AND dead in the water? Poor guy. Sad to see people get his middle name wrong. I wish we had a photo. I don't know much about thr city he was last seen in, does that lake lead into any large bodies of water? If not, you'd think he'd be found by now...

Local here. Very familiar with the area. Greenfield lake does not connect to any other water sources. It is 3 or 4 blocks away from the Cape Fear River; however. It is not a small lake by any means. It is a man made lake that was dug out around the turn of the century. My great-grandfather was one of the workers that dug it out actually. It also is notorious for alligators and has a fair share of wildlife with birds, fish, and turtles. It's very murky so I could see it possible if he sank not being found. Usually bodies are found fairly quickly (yes it has happened more then once). If the body did drift though there is a lot of brush and shrubbery that could have concealed a body. I find this likely but questionable because of how much traffic is in the park. There are sidewalks around the whole lake and boats, kayaks, fishing in the lake itself. I've kayaked there before and ran into at least 5 others in canoes, boats, and other kayaks.
