CHADBOURN, N.C. (WNCN) — Crews were still at the scene Saturday afternoon after a house fire left four children dead in Columbus County overnight, officials said.

The fire was reported just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday at a home along 259 North Colony Road, about a mile northeast of Chadbourn, Columbus County Fire Marshal Shannon Blackman told CBS 17.

The children who died are between the ages of 2 and 7, Blackman said. Two 11-year-old girls managed to escape the blaze, but four sisters died in the fire, according to Blackman.

Blackman told CBS 17 that no adults were at home when the initial fire call was made by the two children who escaped.

Asking the obvious: where were the parents at 2:30am?

Thanks for the link. Anyone knkw what the huge circle is near the house on the satellite view of the map?
I think a reservoir to irrigate those farms.

It appears to be a pond or private lake. That area is very rural and there is a lot of farm land around.

so the oldest individuals in the residence at 2:30 in the morning were two 11 year olds? Were they left to babysit the younger children by the adults in the household or did those adults simply wait for all the kids to be asleep and slip out of the house thinking nobody would wake, no harm no foul?

2, 4, 6 and 7 plus two 11 year old girls. Alone. In a very rural appearing area. Waiting to hear what caused the fire, and why these children were unattended in the middle of the night.

Yep. The big questions are: where were the parents and how did the fire start?

It is literally a nightmare we take actions as adults to avoid - be home with kids, do a safety check around the house before retiring for the night, etc, etc.

I don't understand that.
I’m not sure why it’s leaning that way either? No details have been released regarding the source/cause of the fire, or why they were alone. So I without that information, we’re left to wonder.

Chadbourn is a small town in NC. It is a small little town, mostly rural, where many families have small farms.
It's about 100 miles to Raleigh, NC; and about 60 miles to Myrtle Beach, SC.

Doesn’t appear there will be any arrests?
It may be too early to tell. SMH.
The pics of the deceased children, so pretty all, made me smile and then cry.
As many of us say or think when children die: Who knows what one or more of them might have done for their family members, their town and possibly much more.
Fly high, girls.

Surely there will be some type of investigation.

I knew it. mom left those babies alone and put an 11 year old (or two) in charge of four children 7 or under.

Still no real details about the fire? I found her Facebook page back when I posted the story, pictures of the kids so sad.

I saw her posts on nursing school, so looked her up. I wondered if she was at work - not that it makes the negligence any different. Nursys - Nurse License Verification and Nurse License Lookup
