Arrest made in 2002 murder (The Robesonian)

RED SPRINGS - Margaret Cooper has lived for more than five years wondering what happened to her brother.
During that time, Cooper and other relatives of Galion Leak have kept the faith that someday the mystery of their brother's disappearance would be solved. On Wednesday, the biggest piece of a puzzle that fell apart in September 2002 was found when Reginald Junior Murphy, 31, was arrested and charged with killing Leak.

Sheriff's Lt. Reggle Strickland and SBI agent Trent Bullard arrested Murphy at his job at Mountaire Farms in Lumber Bridge. Murphy, of 1700 Roller Coaster Road, Red Springs, is being held at the Robeson County jail without bond.
Strickland declined to provide many details of what led to Murphy's arrest, and Leak's body has not been recovered. Strickland said Murphy has been a suspect for years in the disappearance, and recently obtained information led to the arrest.

“He was picked up on child support charges, then we later charged him with first-degree murder,” Strickland said.
Cooper said she and her family are relieved even though Leak's body has not been found.

“I am so glad it has happened,” Cooper said. “We hadn't given up. We knew one day the Lord would intervene. He hasn't forgot about us. I knew he hadn't forgot about us.”

Strickland said lawmen believe Leak, who was 40 at the time of his disappearance and lived at 278 Pevia Drive in Red Springs, was shot at an area called the Campbell Compound on Johnson Road in Red Springs. Leak's family reported him missing on Sept. 14, 2002.

During the investigation, the Lumberton Crime Stoppers received a tip that Leak was shot in the head and buried off of Johnson Road.

Cooper said her brother was once friends with Murphy.

“(Murphy) used to live across the road,” Cooper said. “He rented a trailer from my mother. I've heard stories that he was involved but nothing never came of it. We never gave up hope. We knew that one day the Lord would show us something.”

Cooper said it was on a Sunday that Leak's family last saw him alive.

“We came in from church that day and he was leaving in a dark jeep,” Cooper said. “We never saw him again.”
Leak, who has a daughter, became a grandfather after his death.

Cooper hopes that with Murphy's arrest more questions will be answered about what happened to her brother.
“It feels good to finally have him charged,” Sheriff Kenneth Sealey said. “Reggle and the other guys in homicide has worked hard gathering evidence in this case. The tips and other information all came together and, along with the SBI, we were able to get warrant on him.”
