Absolutely infuriating. We (society) should be absolutely unwilling to tolerate & sugar coat this insanity. These monsters need to stay locked up.
Agree. It's not that the system has failed the murderer, it's that the system has failed Iryna.

We just had a situation where a lady rammed her car into a child and a lady in a wheel chair, and they amount of people who see her as a victim makes me want to rip my hair out. I am so tired of people (especially politicians) trying to make the perps look like the victim. It's 2025 we have more access to mental health than ever before. Shoot I get mine on the internet for a very low price, there are options out there!

The mother should be ashamed, the mayor should be ashamed, anyone who tries to make this idiot a victim should be ashamed.
Agree about the mayor and others who are trying to make the murderer appear as a victim.

But it sounds like the mother tried to do the right thing to keep her son out of the community so no one would be another victim of his crimes, but that the people who are responsible for the protection of the community failed the citizens of Charlotte, and Iryna paid with her life.

Iryna is the victim here, and now we need justice for Iryna and her family, and for the Charlotte, NC, community.

Does anyone have more information on the suspect's assault on his sister prior to this murder?

Absolutely. When the unhinged violent people are on the streets, we're all at risk of their violence. There is nothing the victim did to bring on this violence except be in a public place with a KNOWN dangerous person.

Systems protect all of us, not just the people "in" the system. But, systems are expensive and localities need to be willing to pay.

Dear God. That's shocking! Poor Iryna. Just sitting there completely unaware of the monster sitting behind her.

Just that he was released from jail in September 2020, and was arrested again shortly after for assaulting her. Sounds like he was released to her home and assaulted her. I really hate this guy, he should have not had 14 chances, that's 12 TOO many.

The outrageous lack of MSM coverage has made it hard to find out much about this monster. Hopefully now that more people are posting about it, more info will come out. And hopefully those in charge of letting this man walk free will also be held accountable.

Thank you @Ontario Mom and I concur entirely. And IMO seems the only individual in the wrong place at the wrong time was the attacker. MOO

OK I found that there were two simultaneous charges in 2021:
  • ASSAULT ON A FEMALE ( Bond: 2500.00 UNSECURED BOND )
  • INJURY TO REAL PROPERTY
He was charged with parole violation 3 days later, likely stemming from the above charges.

Then one year later, almost to the day:
  • INJURY TO PERSONAL PROPERTY ( Bond: 500.00 SECURED BOND )
  • SECOND DEGREE TRESPASS ( Bond: 500.00 SECURED BOND )

Definitely! Also in case it's helpful to others, sometimes using an off-brand search engine may yield better results. In this case, I searched stories in which the end date of the date range was two months before this murder. The internet gets flooded with stories and it can be difficult to find older news.

This site indexes mugshots and arrests:

Iryna Zarutska came to the United States to be "Safer". That is a sad irony.

Too bad Daniel Penny wasn't on this train. But he has probably learned his lesson, don't help anyone be safe from violence.

Really strong update on Daniel Penny, btw - got hired back in February by Andreessen Horowitz into a16z, American Dynamism Team. Silicon Valley investments. Think instantly well into the six figures for a brand-new analyst. He will be a very wealthy man.

Lots of people get stabbed every day. I’m not sure why anyone in a newsroom would think special attention for this specific case would be profitable outside of a little bit of good keyword SEO (Ukraine + subway/metro train + crime + mental health = you might get 4 cents per click instead of just 2).

The media attention factor is interesting. MOO: if this had been in a larger city, it would’ve been covered more exhaustively. It’s got factors that have historically resulted in more coverage than most (attractive victim, graphic video) but somehow this story didn’t get picked up much outside of Charlotte.
I need to read up on how he was caught.

Great news! I have some friends over there and hadn't heard about this. Analysts typically won't get carry or participate in deals, so I don't expect him to be a wealthy man for several years, and that's if he sticks with it.

This is probably the most unsurprising information ever written about.
I’m pretty sure we all knew the minute we first heard about this atrocity that the killer was seriously and violently mentally ill, had been arrested and returned to the streets multiple times, his family received no help dealing with him and out of fear and frustration kicked him out of their home.
Then he becomes my and your problem.

I had the same thoughts about Daniel Penny. Sadly it seems people are less inclined to step in and come to the aid of a stranger. I watched the video with men leaping over the blood drops and going about their day as if it were any other day. :(
