Charlotte has over 800,000 residents within city limits, it doesn't get much bigger than that in the US minus a few exceptions. I think it's simply just that the media market there isn't that big, it's a relatively nice city in a nice state known more for academics and family life then crime. And as for the factors that historically increase coverage, I think we're slowing starting to see that now; it's one of the biggest stories in the US right now as I type this. There was about a two week time delay before media coverage really picked up, I couldn't fully say why that was the case yet.

I think you might be confusing Charlotte with Research Triangle. Charlotte is not known for academics. Duke is north east of Charlotte, in Durham.

I thought the same when I watched those videos. People just sitting there, ignoring everything, blood dripping, just go about their business.

Iryna's life mattered. In such a short time, she had been through so much it seems. She was young, going about her life, and being a productive resident. She didn't deserve this.

I hope her name is not forgotten in all of this. My heart hurts for her and her family.

I'm so disgusted with the other riders. I can't believe the person or persons behind him did not notice him pulling out that damn knife. I would have called out and alerted someone, this easily could have become a mass attack.

Judges need to start being held accountable for their bad decisions. Justice demands it. Society deserves it.

I saw the story making the rounds Fri and it started to spread on social media like a wildfire. It truly is one of the most disturbing videos I've ever seen, on the same graphic level as the isis/taliban beheading videos. It's shocking how the story received so little national attention. I will say though, my local TV station here in Charleston, SC did report on it Sat. The fact that this kind of random act is happening in our cities disgusts and frightens me. I'm seriously considering going out and buying a handgun and applying for a concealed carry permit. I've NEVER felt this way before! I consider myself pretty level headed but this one has really stirred up some emotions for me. She did nothing. She had a Black Lives Matter poster hung up in room. To be cut down like that is just so very cruel and unfair. I have a feeling this story is going to blow up big time and it should. I just hope it blows up for the right reasons and doesn't get buried in overwhelming racism and political BS!

My heart goes out to Iryna Zarutska and her friends and family.

The video was really scary, Iryna gets onto the train, minding her own business, checking out her phone, and the guy gets up, and just randomly attacks Iryna! That could have happened to anyone.

Could it have been prevented? Be more aware of surroundings? Hardly. I don't think it would have mattered. It was so random, and so fast. Makes me really wonder how many people that guy has killed before.

I meant to say that North Carolina as a whole is known for academics, not Charlotte specifically. My apologies for the confusion.

I’m going to introduce legislation to hold judges accountable when violent repeat offenders they release commit new crimes.It’s easy to release criminals when you’re protected by an armed bailiff at all times. The rest of us aren’t so lucky. Those 12+ judges that released Decarlos Brown Jr. should have their day in court too.

yeah, I feel for his mom because even she straight-up knew and even admitted that the perp should not have been allowed to roam free and continue hurting people. She has to live with the fact that not only did she lose her son, but that someone else lost a daughter and it could have been prevented.

This isn't a mom wailing "my poor innocent child was the victim" to avoid accountability, this is a mother saying "I am not a trained professional, I could not deal with him, he was an immediate threat to me, he should have been incarcerated but nobody else believed me when I said he was going to murder someone, now he has murdered someone and it should not have been allowed to happen"

I think the point is that while your local station carried this on Saturday, this attack occurred on Aug 22. That was still 2 weeks after the event.

I wonder if he is suffering from schizophrenia (obviously not treated IMO) as was reported,
whether somebody sitting close to him
(a seat right in front of him)
triggered some psychotic/delusional/paranoid attack.
(He was seen observing the victim before stabbing)
Other passengers were some distance from the perp.

I'm just trying to understand what caused the attack.

If he was aggressive at home
(mother forced him to leave)
I don't understand why the perp wasn't forcefully put into a mental hospital for treatment 🤔

An insane man was on the loose.
Anybody could be attacked.
He could be hearing voices, etc., telling him to kill.
He could also treat others as threats in this sick mind.

All this is horrific :oops:
